Warning: spoilers ahead for Justice League: Last Ride #6!

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Justice League: Last Ride, Darkseid has become the most powerful Green Lantern in the DC Universe. While the Justice League thought that they had defeated the Lord of Apokolips in his most recent invasion of Earth and the Green Lantern’s homeworld of Oa, it was only the first phase of a sinister master plan. Now, the fractured League must put aside their differences to face a Darkseid who has become more powerful than ever before.

In previous issues of Justice League: Last Ride from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Miguel Mendonça, the League thought that Darkseid had been defeated with the destruction of the Central Power Battery on Oa. However, the battle also resulted in the loss of the Martian Manhunter, an act that caused the League to fall apart. While Green Lantern Hal Jordan eventually convinced Earth’s greatest heroes to come together for one final mission to protect Lobo before he was tried for killing the New Gods of New Genesis, this was all part of Darkseid’s plan. Revealed to still be alive and having somehow possessed Jordan, Darkseid manipulated the League until he could get to his lab full of clone bodies on his world of Apokolips (a backup plan for death not unlike Star Wars’ Emperor Palpatine).

Now, Darkseid has been reborn with the immense power of a Green Lantern thanks to Jordan and the Central Power Battery’s destruction. Furthermore, it’s revealed that Lobo is secretly working for him, meant to lure the League back together and convince them to hide the galactic bounty hunter on what remains of Apokolips. While Batman figures out what their greatest villain is planning, it’s far too late to stop him, as he has already begun to use the green light of willpower to reignite the fires of his world, unleashing its dark power on the DC Universe once more.

While the League isn’t going to stop fighting Darkseid and his reborn legions, his great will to see the end of the universe may result in too much power for them to handle now that he’s become a Green Lantern. That being said, it seems as though the Martian Manhunter has somehow been reborn from the Lanterns’ green light as well, facing Darkseid and claiming that he’ll never be able to outrun justice.

Even with the support of the Martian Manhunter from beyond the grave, things are looking pretty bleak for DC’s heroes in the face of Darkseid’s sinister new light. Obtaining the power of the Green Lanterns has made him incredibly dangerous (more than he already was). Combined with the Justice League being so broken and fractured (especially Batman and Superman’s friendship), it’s going to be a hard challenge unless they can find a way to unify and become the League they once were. Darkseid is a being of terrifying willpower, and now that he’s a Green Lantern, he’s able to turn its full force on the Justice League.
