Darth Vaders Battle with Jar Jar Binks Son Should be Star Wars Canon

The iconic beginning of the Star Wars saga has been re-told from different perspectives since 1977, but in one manga story the son of Jar Jar Binks plays a crucial role in helping Princess Leia Organa keep the stolen Death Star plans from Darth Vader. The ending of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story shows Leia’s ship the Tantive IV narrowly escaping from Vader’s clutches, while A New Hope opens shortly afterwards with Vader boarding the ship in search of Vader and the plans. Star Wars Manga: Black provides an awesomely reasonable explanation of what happened between these two points in the Star Wars timeline that is not canon but absolutely should be.

Star Wars Manga: Black was a one-time manga anthology published in 2005 by Tokyopop, an American distributor of manga and anime. In the story “Tantive IV,” written and penciled by Formalin, Vader mounts a pursuit of Organa on the escaped Tantive IV. But his search initially brings him onto the similarly looking Rebel ship, the Tantive V. Believing the ship to be the same that he just saw escape his control, Vader boards it expecting to find either the stolen information or Princess Leia.

What he finds, however, is a determined Rebel force headed by Abso Bar Binks, the son of none other than Jar Jar Binks. Having lived through the oppression of the Empire, Binks decided to join the Rebellion. As usual, it does not take long for Vader and his stormtroopers to incapacitate Binks and his forces, at which point Vader presses Binks to hand over the stolen plans. Bink admits to not having the information Vader wants. However, after being subjected to Vader’s unique form of torture, Binks confesses to being a decoy. Because his ship resembles Leia’s, they planned to have Vader first pursue his vessel to give Leia’s ship time to escape.

Since Vader falls for the Rebel plan, the manga makes it seems that Bink’s diversion is a success. However, the comedic reality is that Bink’s ploy is only a temporary delay. It does not give Leia enough time to escape and Vader is eventually able to catch her ship. But it might have given her enough time to think of the alternative plan to send the information to Old Ben Kenobi on Tatooine.

Star Wars Manga: Black is a great side story that adds an interesting twist to the overall Star Wars saga. The story, however, is not part of the official Star Wars canon, which is an unfortunate choice by the Star Wars powers that be. This manga one-shot partially rehabilitates the image of Jar Jar Binks, one of the most controversial characters of the Star Wars universe. Indeed, if Jar Jar can raise a rebel as courageous as Abso, he can’t be all that bad. Additionally, by focusing on telling a story that takes place over just a few hours, it does not upset or impact any of the other subplots that occur at the same time.

The manga generates a rich cache of potential content to be explored. For instance, it begs the questions of how the son of Jar Jar Binks came to join the Rebels, the relationship between the Abso Bar Binks and Princess Leia Organa, and how their plan to trick Darth Vader came together. Star Wars Manga: Black has all the elements of being a great canonical addition to Star Wars lore. It’s just too bad that it is not. Still, for true fans it remains a key “unspoken” addition to the Star Wars beginning.
