Warning: Spoilers for Batman #115!

Years ago, DC Comics put Gotham City through hell after an earthquake brought the city to its knees, and now, Batman villain, Poison Ivy, has promised something far, far worse. Pulling Gotham into the depths with her patented plant powers isn’t something Ivy’s entirely capable of doing — it’s something that might come to pass if the fascist forces of The Magistrate don’t leave her in peace.

Threatened by Ivy at the end of Batman #114, by James Tynion IV, and Bengal & Jorge Jimenez, but hinted at during the first few pages of this issue, Gotham collapsing into itself thanks to Ivy’s misguided machinations is something that Gothamites need to be extremely worried about. Not only is Ivy currently at a crossroads as her more wicked personality of Queen Ivy has made her patience short and her temper even shorter, but the nefarious Magistrate forces have finally found her hidden underground lair, and are moving in to claim it.

Revealed to The Magistrate’s mastermind, Simon Saint, at the beginning of the issue after he finally faces facts about his rogue Peacekeeper-01, one of his assistants enters the scene with some important information in tow. Saying that they’ve discovered something “concerning” in the cave systems under Gotham, the assistant goes on to say that should Ivy “use her abilities to their full extent” she could “collapse all of Gotham,” and make a mess “worse than when Gotham was a No Man’s Land,” directly making a comparison to a horrible tragedy from the city’s past that’s still clearly on people’s mind to this day.

To make matters worse, Saint orders his people to go and “bring me Ivy’s head,” a task they’re ready to carry out on the final page of this issue’s cliffhanger ending. And as Ivy realizes that she will not be allowed any peace, she defiantly exclaims, “It’s time to tear down this city and let nature reclaim it as her own!” potentially sealing Gotham’s fate and making their past No Man’s Land predicament look like child’s play.

Utterly leveled in 1998’s event titled Cataclysm, Gotham City is hit by a debilitating earthquake that directly led to it being declared a “No Man’s Land,” forcing all bat-books to tell a year-long follow-up story of a city that has been abandoned by the government and far worse for wear than ever before. Caving in the Batcave, killing thousands in an instant, and unleashing evil and violence on a city that nary had a positive thing to look forward to at the time, Gotham’s latest problem of becoming a new No Man’s Land is a lofty comparison to make, but one no less pressing and real.

So although fans will have to wait until the next issue to find out if Ivy will follow through with her No Man’s Land-level threat, it’s almost a certainty she’ll at least do something destructive to scare The Magistrate back to the surface. Gotham City being destroyed was a huge status quo altering story, and if Poison Ivy gets her way tearing down the city from below, that event will seem tame in comparison.
