They may hold the same title but that does not mean they are the same person, and maybe that’s good. Time to see what this Amazonian Amazon’s got.

Warning: Spoilers for Future State: Wonder Woman #1

After months of previews regarding DC’s new Wonder Woman of the future, fans are finally getting to see Yara Flor in action, and it’s pretty exciting. One question that’s been on readers’ minds up to now is how she compares to the Wonder Woman people already know and love. In Future State: Wonder Woman #1 it’s become obvious that Yara Flor is very much her own kind of hero, definitely not your average goddess, and almost the exact opposite of Diana.

Diana may literally be the most patient and level-headed hero in the DC pantheon and now the title of Wonder Woman belongs to possibly the most hot-headed and impatient one to boot. Diana is the goddess of truth. She is extremely thoughtful, calm, collected, and considerate with the way in which she goes about her life and duty to humanity. It seems that many of the qualities that make her, her, and therefore makeup Wonder Woman, are not entirely shared by the Amazon of the actual Amazon.

In Future State: Wonder Woman #1 fans got to see a lot heavier incorporation of Greek mythology included into the story right off the bat, not neglecting to meld in Brazilian mythology alongside it. While the opening of the issue consisted of Yara fighting off a large hydra in the forest, the main focus of this first issue was Yara’s steadfastness in making her way to the Underworld to save her sister warrior from the God of the Dead’s clutches. Unlike Diana’s well-known tactfulness, Yara seemed to want to go about this through force, immediacy, and with whichever shortcut she could find. The whole reason she defeated a hydra in the first place was so that she could poach it and use its horn as a passage to the underworld in order to face the Lord of the Underworld himself. And while she was fighting it she beckoned for her pegasus, Jerry to come to her aid, non-stop yelling for him to come with zero patience for his delay.

Her impatience and urgency did not quiet once her little forest guardian spirit friend, Caipora, was able to get her into the Underworld; if anything it intensified. She became enraged at the time it was taking to get through the gates to the Underworld. She also becomes frustrated by not knowing she needed payment to cross the River Styx and by the end of the issue even stooping so low as to steal from a damned soul attempting to make his way to his eternity.

There’s no doubt that Yara Flor is a fiery and talented warrior with prowess, strength, and beauty (as well as an adorable and devoted sidekick), but she does not seem to share the same restraint and levelheadedness that her counterpart is so steadfastly identified with. Nevertheless, she is undoubtedly someone readers should be paying close attention to. This first issue was chock-full of beautiful artistry, an intriguing story, and new characters with a whole lot of personality; courtesy of creative team Joëlle Jones and Jordie Bellaire. They’ve created a lot of excitement for what’s to come. They’ve also shown fans that there is more to the Amazon warriors than just the island women of Thymescira and Princess Diana. The title of Wonder Woman has got itself a new warrior goddess and she’s bringing a whole new level of spunk and personality to the role, even if it is matched stride for stride with an extremely human and very relatable tendency for impatience. Let’s just hope that impatience doesn’t get her into too much trouble.
