Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer #2 Something Good Something Bad

On Friday the embargo lifted on the first part of our Guardians of the Galaxy set visit coverage and we shared a lengthy and fun interview with Marvel’s newest star, Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in the space-based adventure. We also shared a new poster and the news at the time that the long-awaited second full-length trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy would debut today, Monday May 19th, marking the second phase of the marketing push for the new property.

The debut occurred on the official Guardians of the Galaxy Facebook page after a Q&A session with director James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. And leading up to the fan-focused social media event, each day over the weekend, Marvel released short 15-second teasers featuring brief glimpses of new action bits that’ll feature in the full-length trailer, and the voices of Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).

One of these three videos even featured Groot, the large, walking tree, handing a flower to a little girl, emphasizing his role as the innocent member of the Guardians of the Galaxy roster, but we’ve yet to hear Vin Diesel voice the character’s three words: “I Am Groot.” Until now, that is.

The new trailer reveals quite a few additional details about the film, from Groot’s ability to grow roots, how Star-Lord’s mask and jet boots function, Ronan’s use of the Universal Weapon (his hammer staff), how the Nova Corps seemingly is forced to work with Star-Lord’s team of “losers” to save the planet Xandar (we also see the Milano hero ship leading a fleet of starships of the same design) and the space station known as ‘Knowhere’ which is inside the gigantic head of a Celestial (comic readers will be pleased to see that one).

We’ve yet to meet Michael Rooker’s blue-skinned Yondu character, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics but we know his role is that of a father figure to Peter Quill (Pratt), and we still don’t know yet how the Nova Corps (led by John C. Reilly’s Rhomann Dey and Glenn Close’s Nova Prime Rael) will be adapted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The official details hint that they might be a security force for the planet Xandar, but in the comics they protect and police the entire galaxy. They’re wearing very practical uniforms in the film, helmets and wrist-mounted blasters included, so we can’t tell if they have “super powers” like they do in the books and that may determine whether or not we’ll ever see characters like Richard Rider (the human character who becomes Nova Prime and had his own solo comics series) appear in the films or if there’s any chance of a Nova spinoff down the road.

Interestingly enough, the leaked description of the second GOTG trailer turned out to be 100% accurate.

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer.
