Just who is the Exo Stranger? Read on to find out.

What’s old is new again. The Stranger will return to Destiny 2 with the upcoming fall expansion, Beyond Light. According to the teaser trailer released yesterday, the Exo Stranger will arrive on Europa to meet with Eris Morn and The Drifter and show them a newly arrived Pyramid ship.

Destiny 1 fans will recognize the mysterious Exo from their initial forays into the Cosmodrome. The Exo Stranger is spotted there while you murder Fallen in a desperate attempt to escape the House of Devils, then you’ll spot her again as you descend into the Temple of Crota to halt a Hive ritual that would destroy the Traveler.

After seeing you in action, the Exo Stranger decides to meet in person on Venus, calling you there to warn you of the pending Vex threat. She’ll then send you to The Black Garden to destroy The Black Heart, which she says is the only way that the Traveler can heal.

During this time, the Exo Stranger exhibits some strange behaviors and abilities. She seems to be able to appear and disappear at will and transport herself over enormous distances. She also keeps talking to one or more unheard voices during your interaction on Venus.

Destiny’s lore seems purposefully vague on who the Stranger is and where she comes from, but various in-game sources do provide a few clues. We know that her powers are something that Rasputin covets thanks to lore entries found in Destiny 1. Lore entries in the Destiny 2 expansion Warmind hint that she might be Elsie Bray, adoptive sister of Ana Bray, although she never mentions it in the few times you encounter The Stranger.

As for those voices, she could be speaking to The Nine as one of her agents, or she might be an agent of The Darkness itself. She mentions that she was “not forged in light,” and there’s really only one other option.

A few other tidbits worth noting. That adorable Ghost Fish that floats beside her in the trailer? That’s not a Ghost, according to Destiny 2 Game Director Luke Smith. Also, the line, “I don’t even have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain,” has become a meme that represents Destiny’s inability to ever finish a narrative thread.

Will Bungie finally finish The Stranger’s story in Beyond Light? We’ll find out on September 22nd.
