There has been a big change when it comes to the production of the much-anticipated Detective Pikachu which may keep us waiting even longer for the movie.

Anyone who is in their late 20s or early 30s likely had their childhood dominated by the introduction of the global phenomenon that was Pokemon. The video games, the television show, the movies, and we don’t even want to recall how much money we more or less forced our parents to spend on Pokemon trading cards.

While Pokemon never completely went away, over the last couple of years it has come back with a vengeance. Its triumphant return was really sparked by the creation of Pokemon Go. The augmented reality mobile game was an even bigger hit than the trading cards of the ’90s, although it didn’t remain as popular for quite as long. Next on the Pokemon agenda is a live-action movie called Detective Pikachu.

There have been a number of Pokemon movies over the years but none quite like this. The motion picture will be set in the real world with an animated Pikachu playing, you guessed it, a detective. He won’t merely repeat his name over and over again either and will be voiced by the talented Ryan Reynolds. The movie is due to hit screens on May 10, 2019, however, a change in the distribution company running things may push that date back.

Legendary originally teamed up with Universal to produce and distribute the film, however, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. will now be taking Universal’s place. Prior to Legendary’s four-year partnership with Universal, the company had teamed with Warner Bros. for eight years. Many believe the switch in the distribution of Detective Pikachu could be a sign that Legendary and Warner Bros. are about to team up for the long haul once again.

While Legendary and Universal have teamed up on some big money makers, most recently Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, what will likely be one of the pairing’s last collaborations, Skyscraper, is currently expected to lose money. If Legendary is going to team up with Warner Bros. once again though they will be hoping to produce more classics like they did the first time around such as The Dark Knight. Hopefully, Detective Pikachu will end up being a positive sign of things to come for both companies.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
