Good news, Nintendo Switch owners. Your home screen will now look a heck of a lot more wholesome, with Carrion’s controversial Switch icon being swapped out for something a little more… Nintendo-friendly.

For the uninitiated, Carrion is an intriguing new release from Devolver Digital, touted as a ‘reverse-horror’ experience. In this retro-infused Metroidvania title, the player is tasked not with hiding from a ghastly creature that’s broken loose from a shady facility, not with trying to fight it, but with controlling it directly and trying to escape. Hence reverse-horror.

As we noted in our review of Carrion, Devolver Digital always put their mark on games, and there are a lot of unique features about this one to appreciate. Metroidvania experiences aren’t exactly a rare breed right now, but the way the creature’s ability set is tied to its current size (it can consume hapless humans to grow and deposit parts of itself to shrink down as needed) is a new spin on the gameplay.

Aside from that, of course, it’s a real adrenaline rush to maneuver those grasping tentacles of yours and cause bloody, pixel art carnage. It’s surprisingly graphic and very, very adults-only. Right down to its original Switch icon, which was distinctly not child-friendly in a very different sort of way.

On the left in the image above (via GoNintendo), you see Exhibit A: The game’s original icon. Clearly, it has no game logo (always a bit of an issue with Switch icons), but has a whole lot of… well, a certain feature of the human anatomy that Nintendo probably didn’t ever expect to see on their latest console’s home screen. It’s more of a website that demands your credit card details sort of image.

Exhibit B, on the right, is the game’s new icon, freshly patched in by Devolver. It’s suitably grim and graphic, but more in a style that befits the game itself than by association.

There we are then, Switch gamers. If you were afraid to let your younger sibling/child/other impressionable children in your lives have a play on your Switch, now you can! Just not on Carrion itself, or they’ll have nightmares about tiny pixel art scientists being torn into bloody flecks.
