Director James Gunn has revealed that he used his time working on the video game Lollipop Chainsaw as inspiration for one of Harley Quinn’s fights in The Suicide Squad. The fight in question sees Harley Quinn mowing down armed guards, with flowers bursting out of each guard when they’re shot. Gunn claimed in a recent interview with Collider that he got this idea from Suda51’s Lollipop Chainsaw.

“I did a video game called Lollipop Chainsaw, and I always loved the sort of … In that game, which I did was with Suda in Japan, I always loved the way that the hearts and beautiful little things came out of people mixed with blood,” explains Gunn.

“So, a lot of it goes back to that, the aesthetic of mixing this horrible gore with Harley’s starry-eyed way of looking at life and creating Harley-vision basically. So that was something that came on very early. It was in the first draft of the script.”

For those who didn’t know, before his popularity as a director really exploded into the mainstream with Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn worked on the script for Lollipop Chainsaw. The game is a hack-and-slash title which saw players take on the role of Juliet Starling as she uses a magic chainsaw to fight zombies with the help of her recently decapitated but still-living boyfriend.

Considering Gunn has worked with both characters, it’s no wonder that the two share certain similarities. Even though Gunn says that Harley “isn’t a James Gunn character” earlier in the interview, it’s clear that Gunn is able to get the best out Harley anyway having created very similar characters in the past.

In related news, another recent interview with James Gunn revealed that the director was contemplating having Superman be the main villain for The Suicide Squad before going with Starro instead. According to Gunn, he loved Starro “from the comics” and claimed that the villain used to “scare the crap out of me when I was a child.”
