Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: New Blood episode 6.

Dexter: New Blood episode 6’s twist ending finally reveals the fate of Iris while setting up Angela’s next moves and Kurt’s growing influence on Harrison’s Dark Passenger. Even after only 6 episodes, Dexter: New Blood has set up plenty of mysteries with its new Iron Lake characters, particularly the background on Angela’s best friend Iris, the identity of Audrey’s biological parents, how Kurt became the Runaway Killer, and why he embalms his victims’ bodies. While the Runaway Killer also poses a threat to the entire town, he’s presenting himself as a personal danger for Dexter, particularly by becoming another father figure for Harrison.

New Blood episode 6, “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches,” sees Dexter finally confirm that Kurt Caldwell is a serial killer, while Angela now sees him as her number one suspect. Angela realizes Kurt lying about Matt likely has something to do with the part of town they were about to search, so she and Teddy venture out to Iron Lake’s secluded caves. After finding man-made walls and piles of rocks, Angela makes a gruesome discovery – the body of her best friend Iris, who has been missing for decades, was murdered and hidden by someone in the caves. Her first call is specifically to Dexter Morgan, not Jim Lindsay.

Meanwhile, New Blood podcaster Molly Park also knows that Kurt is dangerous, or at least has murderous habits, as he almost took her as his next victim before Dexter showed up. Dexter and Harrison have continued to struggle in seeing eye to eye, especially in therapy where Dexter won’t actively participate. Dexter: New Blood’s episode ends with Harrison at his wrestling match, going too far and cruelly breaking his opponent’s arm after being told by Kurt to hurt him. New Blood episode 6’s twist ending signals danger on all fronts for Dexter, as he can now solve one of Iron Lake’s oldest cold cases, knows Kurt is a serial killer, and needs to keep Harrison’s Dark Passenger away from Kurt’s influence.

New Blood Sets Up Kurt As Dexter’s Next Victim

Dexter New Blood Episode 6 Twist Ending Explained Was Iris Runaway’s First Victim

While Dexter Morgan was previously as much in the dark about the string of missing persons as Angela was, he discovered in New Blood episode 6 that Kurt is the Runaway Killer they’re searching for. Paired with the fact that the dangerous serial killer even more twisted than himself has become another father figure for Harrison, Kurt Caldwell absolutely fits Dexter’s killing code. One way or another, the serial killers that threaten Dexter’s home, friends, and family end up either dead on his table or killed in another way, so there’s no great reason why Kurt will be an exception. The only difference is that Harrison is fond of Kurt, and has already vehemently defended the secret serial killer from suspicion by his father. Considering Harrison fits the young runaways victim pattern for New Blood’s Runaway Killer, Harrison could become a victim himself. If so, Dexter will have no choice but to put Kurt on his table, slice his cheek (as already foreshadowed by Chloe attacking him in New Blood episode 5), and dump him in the incinerator with Matt.

Kurt Is Making Harrison’s Dark Passenger More Dangerous

Harrison’s Dark Passenger has been coming to light more and more throughout Dexter: New Blood, with the teen already exhibiting two very public attacks from his violent urges. The first was cutting Ethan in the leg and nearly killing him, with the second being Harrison breaking the arm of his opponent after the referee had already blown the whistle to stop. Dexter has been actively trying to suppress Harrison’s Dark Passenger by taking him to therapy instead of teaching him the Code and repeating Harry’s biggest mistake. Harrison is becoming increasingly angry in New Blood, and it doesn’t help that the most influential figure in Iron Lake, who also happens to be an unhinged serial killer, is taking a personal interest in him. Before Harrison began the match, Kurt told him to hurt his opponent, and that’s just what Harrison did. When the crowd and teams see Harrison break the teen’s arm, everyone gasps and looks on in horror, while Kurt laughs, smiles, and tells Harrison how proud he is of him. Kurt is congratulating and encouraging Harrison’s violent acts, while Dexter is trying to suppress him.

Since Harrison is only seeking validation and encouragement instead of Dexter criticizing him and wanting to address the dangers of his dark urges, he’s going to begin only listening to New Blood’s villain Kurt Caldwell rather than his father. Considering Kurt’s violent urges have turned him into a serial killer without a code for innocence or morality, Kurt taking on Harrison as a mentee is far more dangerous than if Dexter had irresponsibly taught him the Code in New Blood. Because Harrison sees Kurt as someone who actually sees the positives in him instead of pointing out what’s wrong with him, Dexter’s influence in helping Harrison control his urges and work through them is going to be completely ignored. As Harrison and Kurt become closer and he grows angrier with Dexter, the possibility of Harrison’s Dark Passenger manifesting in killing someone is increasing.

New Blood Hints Iris Was Kurt’s First Victim

Dexter New Blood Episode 6 Twist Ending Explained Was Iris Runaway’s First Victim

After decades of searching for her best friend, New Blood’s police chief Angela has finally found her in a heartbreaking discovery. While digging in the caves, she finds a long-decayed Iris in the same clothes and bracelet she wore when they were younger, suggesting Iris has been buried in the caves for about as long as she’s been missing. Since Angela was only searching in the caves because she was suspicious of Kurt and whether or not he was hiding Matt’s body there, this revelation has far more dire consequences. Now, Angela will see Kurt as her prime suspect for killing Iris, which is likely true. It’s unclear how long Kurt has been killing before Dexter: New Blood’s timeline, but the 20-or-so years since Iris went missing would make sense for her being his first victim. The police department in Iron Lake wasn’t paying attention to the missing women back when Angela was in high school, suggesting it hadn’t yet become the same problem that it is in New Blood. Angela has been hunting for the explanations behind the patterns of young missing women almost all of her life, and it would make perfect sense for Kurt Caldwell, Iron Lake’s most powerful resident, to be the sadistic killer responsible for the case that inspired her to become a cop.

Why Angela Says She Needs “Dexter Morgan”

The final words in Dexter: New Blood episode 6 come from Angela and Dexter after she finds Iris’s body. She tearfully calls Dexter and he answers, “It’s Jim,” to which she responds, “I don’t need Jim; I need Dexter Morgan.” She clearly isn’t calling for support from her boyfriend, instead needing assistance from the original series Dexter Morgan; the notable forensic blood-spatter analyst who helped solve the cases around and capture some of the most prolific serial killers in Miami. Since Angela knows his real identity and experience with Miami Metro PD, the reason she needs Dexter Morgan is to help investigate Iris’s body and discover what happened to her.

Iron Lake’s resources are small, with the department having to call an outside forensic specialist to analyze and test the crime scene where the white deer was found. Without having to draw too much attention to Angela’s revelation about Kurt being a suspect in Iris’s death, she can bring in Dexter to secretly work on the case that has such a personal connection to her. Although she can’t trust Dexter to be truthful about his identity – especially since she still doesn’t know Dexter is The Bay Harbor Butcher – she can still trust his forensic analysis, tests, and expert opinion on what happened to Iris. If Dexter is successful, he’ll be integral in solving one of Iron Lake’s oldest cold cases in Dexter: New Blood.
