Disney: 10 Villains That Would Be Impossible to Create Today

Some Disney villains are simply timeless. And others, well, it’s a good thing they aren’t being pitched today.

Fans of the house of the mouse have always had a soft spot for Disney’s rogue’s gallery of villains, haven’t they? From the elegant evil of Maleficent to the side-splitting slapstick of Captain Hook, there are just some villains that make bad look good. With that in mind, certain members of the gang might not sit well if introduced to today’s audiences.

It’s not that the animated characters do anything gruesome, at least by Disney standards, but some of their methods, motives, and personality traits might be more than a little problematic. But since when do these guys play well with others?

10 Scar

Scar gets an honorable mention on this list simply because lighting can’t strike twice, and Disney certainly tried. This wretched royal has been considered by many of the Disney fandom as the studio’s perfect villain, which is true to a certain extent. He is, after all, one of the only animated villains who does exactly what he says he’ll do. It’s simply a case of imitated but never duplicated.

9 Prince John

There’s nothing inherently wrong with Prince John. On the contrary, he’s possibly the funniest Disney villain in existence. He’s essentially an overgrown toddler in king’s clothing, but that’s not what keeps him from evolving for modern audiences.

The fact of the matter is that Prince John is kinda weak compared to some of his contemporaries. Position of power aside, he truly isn’t much of a threat. A modernization of the character would have to strip away everything that makes him memorable.

8 The Evil Queen

Snow White’s evil stepmother sort of suffers the same fault as Prince John, but more along the lines of how basic she is. As iconic as she is, she’s still a bit one-dimensional, fairest one of all or not. Though she was modernized in Disney’s Once Upon a Time, she’s not the same maniacal monarch fans know and love.

7 Cruella De Vil

Cruella De Vil is so outrageous and so magnificently maniacal, that to try to recreate, reenvision, or reimagine her borderlines on heresy.

Much like Scar, she was near perfect in her concept and delivery, but unlike her prowling peer from the Pridelands, her live-action adaptation only perfected on her predecessor. However, if she were to be made as a brand new concept today, more than a few animal rights activists would be up in arms. Fur is murder, after all.

6 Hans

Hans was the first of Disney’s many “hidden villains.” With one line, he absolutely shattered the mold by which Disney villains are formed. But at the same time, he also sparked a cliche that seems to have plagued Disney since. It was fun the first time, but now finding the villain is more of a guessing game. With Hans came the likes of King Candy, Yokai, and Bellwether, and the trope was born.

5 The Pink Elephants

Though they aren’t technically villains, they are an antagonistic force that would be problematic today. Not because they do anything illegal, immoral, or unlawful, but because they are the product of a drunken baby elephant’s hallucinations.

This might have been a slightly twisted little sequence in the ’40s, but modern audiences would probably get up and arms if the sequence was screened today. At least Burton gave fans a unique spin on it.

4 Governor Ratcliffe

Pocahontas isn’t an awful movie, it’s just problematic. Altering the narrative of a historical figure is one thing, but there is such a thing as too far, and Disney is more than a little guilty. One of the biggest problems in that regard has to be Governor Ratcliffe, and not just because his portrayal is historically inaccurate. Let’s just say there was a reason the song “Savages” was heavily altered before the final screening.

3 Si and Am

As demonstrated with Ratcliffe, the subject of race seems to have been a repeated problem with Disney. Even wholesome films like Lady and the Tramp weren’t immune to certain caricatures.

This proves to be especially problematic with one of the film’s most recognized songs. Si and Am are a pair of Siamese cats who serve as the antagonists for Lady. Though they don’t do anything insanely obscene, they are presented as a blatant Asian stereotype. Hence their removal from the remake.

2 Br’er Fox

Although James Baskett’s vocal talent did bring most of the animated characters to life, they simply would not fly today outside of Splash Mountain. Br’er Fox is just one of many issues with the film, but he might be the most glaring, especially given a certain trap for Br’er Rabbit. The guy just leaves a bad taste in the mouths of modern viewers, even without the reputation of the film. His laundry list of torture ideas for Br’er Rabbit was unsettling then, he’s unsettling now, end of discussion.

1 Frollo

Frollo is undoubtedly Disney’s most realistic villain. He’s manipulative, driven by power, lust, and racial hatred, and he does it all while claiming to be a good Christian. The tragic beauty of the matter is that Disney would never get away with his performance today. If made today, without a single change, Frollo’s presence alone would slap a hard PG-13 on HoND. That being said, it would still make for one interesting character.
