The logo for Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake gives the original a 2020s makeover. The upcoming film from acclaimed writer-director Robert Zemeckis revisits the House of Mouse’s second-ever animated feature, which remains considered one of the greatest ever produced in the medium. Pinocchio is set to premiere in Fall 2022 as a Disney+ exclusive.

Based on the 1883 Italian children’s book The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, both the original movie and Zemeckis’ remake follow the (mis)adventures of the titular marionette puppet brought magically to life, whose greatest wish is to become a real boy. This new Pinocchio comes as part of a trend of Disney producing live-action versions of their animated classics, most of which have proven financially successful despite meeting critical disapproval. It also continues the trend of attracting top-tier creative talent, however, with Zemeckis joining a list of directors that includes Tim Burton, David Lowery, and Barry Jenkins.

Now, as part of today’s Disney+ Day event, the Pinocchio logo gets a fresh coat of paint in the first indication of how the film updates the original. While the 1940 movie was all hand-drawn, the title card included, Zemeckis’ version will mix live-action with CG-animation, and the logo is accordingly given that crucial third dimension. The original Disney+ Twitter post also confirms its Autumn release after the news broke in the company’s call with investors earlier this week.

Perhaps the most exciting news about Pinocchio so far has been its casting, which is being filled out with genuinely incredible talent. The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play the title character, while Tom Hanks, a frequent Zemeckis collaborator, has been cast as his maker, Geppetto. EGOT-candidate Cynthia Erivo and live-action Gaston actor Luke Evans round out the in-person cast as the Blue Fairy and the Coachman, respectively. In terms of voice roles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be Pinocchio’s conscience, Jiminy Cricket, Keegan Michael-Key plays the deceptive fox “Honest” John Worthington Foulfellow, and The Sporanos’ Lorraine Bracco is cast as Sofia the Seagull.

Prospective viewers might be weary of another Disney live-action remake, and for good reason, but there’s potential for Pinocchio to break the trend of disappointments. Zemeckis is known for wanting to push the envelope on filmmaking technology, and this movie offers a great opportunity to play with motion capture on Disney’s dime. However, a solid match of director to material has led fans astray before, with Burton’s Dumbo failing to fully capitalize on the promise of the pairing on paper, so it’s likely best to limit anticipation until the first bit of footage releases.
