In the forthcoming Devil’s Reign, the Kingpin rains terror down upon the heroes of the Marvel Universe, and in the pages of Devil’s Reign: Superior Four, he enlists the aid of Doctor Octopus. In a special first look at the cover for issue two, on sale in print and digital February 2022, the villain is assembling his own version of the Fantastic Four.
Despite his formidable physical presence and vast resources, the Kingpin mostly interacts with street-level vigilantes such as Spider-Man, Daredevil, Black Cat and the Punisher. Devil’s Reign will see Kingpin aim higher than ever, setting his sights on Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Captain America and others. In addition to the six-issue Devil’s Reign miniseries, Marvel will release a number of tie-in titles, including January’s Devil’s Reign: Superior Four. Written by Zac Thompson, with art by Davide Tinto, Doctor Octopus joins Kingpin in his crusade, gaining access to Fisk’s technology. Reaching out across the Multiverse, he assembles versions of himself from alternate Earths, creating the Superior Four. February’s issue two will pit the various Doctor Octopuses against the mainline version, as he struggles to retain control of the team. The issue’s cover, by Ivan Shavrin, showcases Doctor Octopus at his most devious, bringing together his own demented version of the Fantastic Four!
Marvel provided AIPT with a first look at Shavrin’s cover. A maniacal Doctor Octopus unveils his new team: multi-armed versions of the Hulk, Wolverine and Ghost Rider. The solicitation provided to AIPT did not make clear if these unique versions would be in the story, or if they were created just for the cover.
Advanced information Marvel has released on Devil’s Reign has indicated that Kingpin will be coming for the Fantastic Four, and Doctor Octopus’ Superior Four will be their replacement. One Doctor Octopus is formidable in his own right, but a group of them working in unison is terrifying; however, the solicitation makes it clear this is not the case. The cover is also a homage to an infamous Fantastic Four story. In 1991’s Fantastic Four #347-349, the traditional team was replaced by Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider and the Hulk—three of whom are represented on Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #2’s cover. This incarnation of the Fantastic Four only lasted a handful of issues, but fans remember it to this day and Ivan Shavrin’s cover is the perfect tribute.
Could these unique versions actually appear in the story, brought from across the multiverse to help further Doctor Octopus’ agenda? It is most likely the cover is just a tribute to a classic story, but Doctor Octopus’ twisted version of the Fantastic Four strikes a terrifying pose in the cover to Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #2.
