As Doctor Strange’s story continues in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, the Sorcerer Supreme should be made a real Avenger. Stephen Strange is one of the most powerful and influential superheroes on Earth, but so far, he’s been shunted to the sidelines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Strange has a prominent position in Earth’s defense, which will grow when he likely becomes Sorcerer Supreme, he’s still somewhat disconnected from the Avengers and superhero community.

Strange’s first widespread introduction to the team is in Avengers: Infinity War when his guardianship over the Time Stone becomes critical in the fight against Thanos. In some ways, Strange is the lynchpin of the Avenger’s victory, sacrificing the Time Stone so he can set in motion events that lead to the one reality (out of billions) in which they’re successful. During Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark’s trust in Strange’s predictions leads him to a realization about how to defeat Thanos and prompts his universe-saving sacrifice.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is an opportunity for writers to strengthen the connections between Strange and other superheroes on Earth. Strange doesn’t have to officially become an Avenger, but he should at least have an unofficial role with the team so they can work together even when the fate of the world is not at stake. As Strange says in Avengers: Infinity War, his job is to protect reality, presumably from alternate reality threats and manipulations of the time-space continuum. With the Avengers tasked with protecting Earth, their jobs will invariably intersect. Working with the Avengers will allow Strange to take advantage of their strengths and lessen his own weaknesses. The reverse is also true: By working with Strange, the Avengers will have better intel and be more prepared for extraterrestrial threats.

Strange has an unusual role within the MCU in that he mostly stayed off the radar until Avengers: Infinity War. He did pop up once before in Thor: Ragnarok to help Thor and Loki locate Odin, but has otherwise been mostly unseen in the franchise. So far, Strange tends to appear in times of crisis, revealing important information to whoever needs it. As the last line of defense against entities like Dormammu, Strange’s position will be stronger with backup. In order to protect the universe as a whole, Strange, the Avengers, and S.H.I.E.L.D. all need to be on the same page.

Giving Doctor Strange a role with the Avengers could help him keep his ear to the ground regarding Earth-based threats and villains. Strange, one of the only people on Earth with knowledge of the Infinity Stones, is mostly focused on the big picture. Staying in touch with the Avengers can ensure that Strange sees clues he may otherwise overlook. For example, intel from the Avengers about the movements of Hydra might help Strange theorize about their master plan and prepare for larger threats. Likewise, as the Avengers begin to confront challenges and enemies beyond Earth, they will need significant help from superheroes like Captain Marvel and Stephen Strange. Like Marvel, Strange has a unique position and powers that are useful when it comes to addressing non-Earth-based threats. In the interplanetary war with Thanos, S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to call for Captain Marvel’s help through her connection to Fury. The Avengers need a similar way to call upon Strange for help if they run across a multidimensional problem. The MCU should build those relationships in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
