The BBC has finally released the Doctor Who season 13 trailer, and here’s a full breakdown of everything fans can expect in Doctor Who Flux. Still, Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker appeared on The Graham Norton Show, and the BBC took advantage of this opportunity to drop an action-packed trailer. It confirms long-standing rumors that Doctor Who season 13 will feature the return of the Weeping Angels, gave a stunning glimpse of the new Sontaran design, and even featured an unexpected glimpse of another creature from the Russell T. Davies era – the return of the Ood.

One of the Doctor’s oldest accessories, the sonic screwdriver was invented by Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor, and each incarnation has created their own unique version. While the War Doctor mocked his successors for treating the sonic screwdriver as a weapon in “The Day of the Doctor,” this suggests it really does have offensive capabilities. Marketing for Doctor Who season 13 has suggested the Doctor will lose the sonic screwdriver over the course of the adventure.

17. The Doctor Meets Mary Seacole, The Doctress

The Doctor Who Flux trailer opens with a tantalizing glimpse of the Doctor using the sonic screwdriver, before moving on to some mysterious glimpses of everyday people who have presumably gotten caught up in cosmic events. One woman warns that “It’s happening again,” suggesting the phenomenon driving Doctor Who season 13 has been taking place for quite some time. The trailer then moves on to show the historical figure Mary Seacole, a British-Jamaican nurse who set up the “British Hotel” behind the lines during the Crimean War. After her death Seacole was largely forgotten for nearly a century, but she’s become more well-recognized over the last few decades, and a statue was erected in her honor at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London in 2016. Chris Chibnall’s Doctor Who has been criticized for neglecting racism as a theme, but Mary Seacole was a pioneer in the battle against prejudice, so season 13 may be correcting that mistake. Amusingly, Mary Seacole didn’t call herself a nurse; rather, she identified as a “Doctress,” due to her Jamaican ancestry, so it will be entertaining to see her cross paths with the Doctor.

You have someone who, particularly at the beginning, is just trying to keep up, but in doing so is the accidental hero. I suppose he’s quite childlike in a lot of ways, in a way that the Doctor really loves.”

15. A First Look At Season 13’s Sontaran Fleet

The Doctor Who Flux trailer presents a glimpse of an alien fleet; the vessels can easily be recognized as Sontaran, suggesting the warlike aliens will invade the Earth in force. The Doctor has been traveling through time and space for a long time, but to her shock in Doctor Who season 13 she’s encountering something she’s never come across before. Doctor Who season 12 shook the Doctor to the core when she learned she is, in fact, the Timeless Child, a being who potentially predates the universe itself and who became the base genetic code for every Gallifreyan who lives within the Citadel. Her knowledge of her past was stolen by Time Lord science, which also incorporates attention filters to ensure a person isn’t drawn to anything that will help them identify any inconsistencies; that may well explain why the Doctor has never been aware of the Flux before now, because she needed to become aware of her stolen past to spot it.

In reality, this is apparently a new character named Karvanista, and the BBC has hinted they may not be an ally – because they are described as a “new monster.” An official shot released by the BBC showed Karvanista wielding a glowing ax-like weapon, ironically similar to a vibro-ax from Star Wars.

11. A Sontaran Goes To War In Doctor Who Flux

The Doctor Who Flux trailer provides a stunning glimpse of the new Sontarans. Some of the most fearsome warriors in the galaxy, the Sontarans were introduced in the Jon Pertwee era and they’re familiar enough with time travel to actually invade Gallifrey, the Time Lord homeworld, in “The Invasion of Time.” The Sontarans have appeared several times since the Doctor Who relaunch in 2005, but they’re being handled very differently here. “The spin we needed for Series 13 was to make them look more warfaring,” designer Ray Holman explained in Doctor Who Magazine #570. “The 2008 Sontarans are gorgeous, but the scripts we’re working with are about war and battlefields. These Sontarans should be down-and-dirty warmongers in the mud, conquering the universe. It was either Chris or me who said they need to be dirty, filthy Sontarans.” Incongruously, the Sontaran in this shot is going to war on a horse – but that may well reflect the endless war the Sontarans wage, with the same kind of mismatched technology seen in other long-lasting wars in Doctor Who.

10. The Ood Return In Doctor Who Season 13

The Sontarans – and some other returning monsters – have long been rumored for Doctor Who season 13, but the appearance of an Ood was particularly unexpected. Although most Ood are good-natured and servile, there have been exceptions in Doctor Who lore – notable Brian the Ood, an assassin who appeared in the “Time Lord Victorious” transmedia event. The Ood are vulnerable to telepathic possession, with their eyes glowing red and their communication spheres becoming deadly weapons, so the Doctor will need to be very careful.

9. A Glimpse Of The Flux, The Driving Force Behind Season 13

The Doctor Who season 13 trailer provides a glimpse of an unknown phenomenon sweeping across a planet. It’s reasonable to assume this is the “Flux” season 13 is named after, the phenomenon that drives the entire narrative – and if it consumes entire worlds, as hinted in this shot, then it may well do so to the entire planet Earth. This shot is potentially from the first episode, which Chibnall has hinted opens in spectacular fashion. “We’re starting at the level you’d normally see in a finale, with cataclysmic events,” he revealed to Doctor Who Magazine. “Episode one is the opening to a big mystery. It’s fast-paced, it’s exciting, and it’s full of questions. There are multiple new characters, multiple mysteries and more than one antagonist. It sets up the mysteries that we’re going to spend the next few weeks exploring. This is the biggest story we’ve ever told.”

8. Introducing Vinder To Doctor Who Season 13

Jacob Anderson is joining Doctor Who as Vinder, although the BBC is remaining extremely secretive about his role. The Doctor Who Flux trailer gives the best look yet at the insignias marking his outfit, and they appear to be Judoon in origin. The Judoon are an alien race of supposed “police” who serve galactic authorities, and Vinder may be associated with them, some sort of “space cop.” The Doctor has history with the Judoon – they worked for the Time Lords at one point, and imprisoned the Doctor for decades before she was broken out by Captain Jack in “Revolution of the Daleks.” That means Vinder is potentially an enemy rather than an ally.

7. The Doctor Falls From Heaven – Has The TARDIS Exploded?

One tantalizing shot in the Doctor Who season 13 trailer shows the Doctor and her fam falling from the skies after a mysterious explosion. It’s difficult to say exactly what is exploding, but the shot is reminiscent of the Patrick Troughton story “The Mind Robber,” where the TARDIS itself was destroyed when it strayed out of the boundaries of this universe into a dimension called the Land of Fiction. There have been hints Doctor Who Flux will go beyond the boundaries of the universe as well, meaning the TARDIS could be vulnerable.

6. Doctor Who Season 13’s New Monsters – Are These The Ravagers?

A lot of familiar faces are set to appear in Doctor Who season 13, but there will also be some whole new threats. An earlier Doctor Who teaser trailer mentioned a new threat called the Ravagers who would be attacking Earth alongside Sontarans and Weeping Angels, and this latest trailer gives a brief look at what may well be a Ravager. This being may be new to viewers, but his words suggest he has a long history with the Doctor; meeting with her, he declares that their final fight has begun. It’s possible the Ravagers, too, are a part of a secret history that has been erased from the Doctor’s memories. A later shot shows a female Ravager dissolving something, suggesting these creatures are related to the dust effect earlier in the trailer.

5. Doctor Who Season 13’s Crimean War

No-one can fault showrunner Chris Chibnall on his ambition; the Doctor Who Flux trailer shows one of the most exciting battle scenes in the show’s history, with two armies colliding. The forces are mismatched to say the least, with Sontaran clones on one side and British soldiers from the Crimean War on the other. Conceptually, this feels vaguely reminiscent of the Patrick Troughton story “The War Games,” where a rogue Time Lord named the War Chief stitched together a patchwork planet of different time zones to go up against one another in order to create the ultimate army; it’s interesting to note that story coined the term “time zones” to describe the different sections, and Chibnall has been using that same phrase to describe the time travel aspect of Doctor Who season 13.

4. The Weeping Angels Return In Doctor Who Flux

Set photos have long hinted at the return of the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who season 13, and the trailer confirms them. The Weeping Angels are some of the most dangerous creatures in the universe, predators who feast on temporal energy. They’re normally solitary – they’re traditionally called the “Lonely Assassins” – but the trailer shows a large number of them. It’s likely they have been drawn to a source of temporal energy they intend to feast upon, presumably associated with the Flux.

3. The Cybermen Attack In Doctor Who Season 13

It seems the Cybermen are making an unexpected return in Doctor Who season 13 as well. The trailer shows a glimpse of Cybermen advancing – the so-called “CyberWarriors,” featuring oddly spiky armor. Chibnall appears to be something of a fan of the Cybermen, reinventing them for Doctor Who season 12 and now bringing them back once again. It will be interesting to see whether there are any more classic monsters, such as the Daleks.

2. The Doctor Falls – Through The Time-Space Vortex Or The Boundary?

The Doctor is shown falling into a strange, undefined energy field. At first glance this appears to be the time-space vortex itself. Regeneration energy is drawn from the time-space vortex – this is why River Song can regenerate, because she was conceived within the vortex. As the Timeless Child, the Doctor presumably has a unique relationship with the time-space vortex, in that she can draw upon its energies to an unprecedented degree, so she could be one of the few beings who could survive within it. Attentive viewers have, however, noted the colorscheme is similar to that of the Boundary in Doctor Who season 12’s “The Timeless Children.” This was portrayed as the gateway to another dimension, the origin of the Timeless Child. If this is indeed the Boundary, then Doctor Who Flux could be tied to the Doctor’s true origin story, meaning viewers could be about to learn where the Doctor is really from.

1. The Sontaran Fleet Explode In Doctor Who Flux

Doctor Who season 13 may finally give viewers a look at the Sontaran fleet – but it won’t last long. Some viewers have complained the Doctor Who Flux trailer shows the end of the Sontaran episode, with the Sontaran fleet destroyed, but their complaints may be premature; this could actually be the setup for the Sontaran episode instead, with the aliens stranded on Earth, thus deciding to conquer the planet for the glory of the Sontaran Empire. As Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor learned in “The Time Warrior,” the episode that introduced the Sontarans into Doctor Who, a stranded Sontaran is a very dangerous force indeed – and an army of them even worse.
