Our The Last of Us Part II review is coming soon, but we had to take a break from binging one of the game’s best features: the sound design.

Sound design is an aspect of game design that often goes overlooked by players. It’s unfortunate because sound design plays such a critical role in the overall experience. Gamers have an easy time talking about impressive graphics, HDR, and ray tracing (RTX ON!) but don’t seem to have the same vocabulary or enthusiasm when it comes to talking about a game’s sound design. What’s more, players often buy monitors and TVs for superior image quality, but neglect to invest in quality audio hardware.

If you’re playing The Last Of Us Part II with stereo speakers right now — or even worse, your TV’s built-in speakers — stop what you’re doing, and find some headphones to use. Even if all you have are a pair of Apple Earbuds, I can’t stress this enough: if you don’t play with headphones (or a high-quality surround sound system) you’re really missing out on major part of this game.

Listening is a big deal in the world of TLOU2. Not only narratively, as strange softens are often the first sign of trouble, but also mechanically, with the listen ability that lets Ellie focus in and track enemies through walls and solid objects. Sound is the thread the connects us to Ellie’s world. We don’t see through Ellie’s eyes, we can’t feel the things Ellie feels, but we do hear exactly what she hears. The sound design is crucial to immersion, and you really need a good stereo setup to appreciate it.

TLOU2’s sound design is nothing short of astounding. Simple pleasures like field stripping your rifle at a workbench or crafting a Molotov cocktail are given so much weight and purpose through sound. The stress and anxiety of slowly crawling between groups of clickers are even more terrifying when their clicks and screams reverberate accurately through different sized rooms and space. The expertly crafted sound design gives the game greater verisimilitude and creates emotional stakes. Play this game with headphones, thank us later.
