A fan recently showed off their craftsmanship by recreating DOOM Eternal’s deadly DoomBlade in real life. DOOM Eternal, which released in March of this year, includes a collection of familiar weapons from the game’s previous iteration along with new ones such as the Ballista and Heavy Cannon.

As excitement loomed over its release, players began to realize that DOOM Eternal has no pistol. This decision by developer id Software strayed from the classic DOOM gameplay formula, where players would often begin the game with a pistol and over time progress to other weapons. The disappointment over the lack of a pistol in DOOM Eternal became, for some players, a quest to obtain one, and since then, a mod to get a pistol emerged along with guides to get the secret pistol in DOOM Eternal. The determination of players in their pursuit of this classic weapon stamped the strong bond between fans and their love of the weapons of the DOOM franchise.

Earlier this month on Reddit, a user by the name of u/miscreations recreated one of the new weapons from DOOM Eternal – the DoomBlade. In DOOM Eternal, the DoomBlade is a short-ranged weapon which gives players the ability to effortlessly cut through demon flesh and bone. The brief time-lapsed clip showcases the impressive work that went into creating the real-life variation of the DoomBlade, and fans praised its details and realistic functionality, something which is strikingly close to the in-game’s version. u/miscreations flaunted his recreation’s capability as a real blade by putting it to the test against a watermelon, and the recreated DoomBlade easily stabbed, sliced, and chopped through the fruit, which later went on to be eaten by a non-demon rabbit. The DoomBlade is not the only video game-inspired weapon u/miscreations has crafted. He has also recreated a machete found in the FPS survival horror, Hunt: Showdown. Fan recreations are obviously not a new phenomenon, and players have made their own versions of everything from the swords of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the shields of Assassin’s Creed Origins. The increasing popularity of this artisanship, and the subsequent creations it produces, have helped to power the cosplay scene which draws massive crowds at events like ComicCon and E3. Fan recreations like u/miscreations’ DoomBlade are one of the ways video games are able to maintain a following in their respective communities offline.

For most people, gaming is a form of escapism from the everyday and often mundane routine called life. It is, therefore, no surprise that occasionally standout moments in a game can create the desire to see some of them manifested in real life; whether it’s the ability to magically self-heal, fast travel, or in the case of DOOM Eternal, find a new culinary skill by using a DoomBlade to cut watermelons. If the enemies stay in the game, why not enjoy a fruit salad?
