The Dragon Ball series by Akira Toriyama primarily focuses on one thing: fighting. That’s why the series has amassed so many fans since it was created decades ago. Though the series mainly focuses on Goku, several new characters have been born. Goku himself has grown older, gotten married to his childhood friend Chi-Chi, and had two sons named Gohan and Goten.
In Dragon Ball Z, we watch Gohan grow up to become an intelligent young man who fights evil at night and attends school during the day. At Orange Star High School, Gohan meets Videl, who would later become his wife. The pair becomes close and gets married. Videl would give birth to Pan, a little girl with one-fourth Saiyan blood.
Pan didn’t get much screen time in Dragon Ball Z, but she became one of the leading characters in Dragon Ball GT. We were able to see her grow as a character and see just how much she differed from the other female characters of the series. While her mother, Videl, grandmother Chi-Chi, and friend Bulma, sat on the sidelines, Pan wasn’t afraid to jump into the fight to prove herself.

20 Almost Had A Different Name
Beerus was ready to destroy the Earth. The only way to stop him was to combine the power of six Saiyans. There were only five available, and all hope seemed lost. Videl shocked the room when she announced she was pregnant with Gohan’s baby. Though the mood in the room is serious, everyone cheers. Goku and Chi-Chi are excited to become grandparents. Chi-Chi suggests that they name their child “Gomen,” which would combine the “Go” of the Son family men and “men” which is the suffix of many Japanese noodle dishes like ramen and somen. Chi-Chi suggested the name, even before the parents knew the gender of the child. Though it was well-meaning, she didn’t expect Videl to take her seriously.

In the Dragon Ball series, there is power in posing and dancing. When two Saiyans fuse, they have to pose for the same position or else the fusion won’t work. 18 Has Had The Same Voice For Decades
The English dubs of Dragon Ball have had at least seven different voice actresses for Pan. Watch an episode, and you might not know whose to expect. The Japanese dub only has one for Dragon Ball Z, GT, and Super. Yuko Minaguchi has performed the voice of Pan and her mother, Videl, for decades. Besides being her voice actress in the anime, she also provided Pan’s voice in the Dragon Ball video games. The only time Minaguchi didn’t perform her voice was in Dragon Ball Kai where Shino Kakinuma took over temporarily. Minaguchi was residing in the United States while the series was being developed. She would later come back to be the voice of Videl and Pan in Dragon Ball Super.

When you first watched Goku transform into a Super Saiyan, it probably took your breath away. You wanted nothing more than to turn into another powerful form when you were angry. It’s not surprising that Pan also wants to become one of these super-powered beings, and she lives in the same universe as them. Unfortunately, she is currently unable to transform. Luckily for her, the first female Super Saiyan, Caulifla, recently appeared in Dragon Ball Super, so it isn’t impossible. We have hope that Pan will make her dream come true in the future.
16 Future Trunks Didn’t Recognize Her
Trunks confused most viewers when he appeared on-screen. All we knew was that after a brief, off-screen romance between Bulma and Vegeta, Trunks was born. To make things even more confusing, Future Trunks later appeared in the Future Trunks Saga. He was older and from an alternate timeline where Android 17 and 18 eliminated the Z-Fighter team.

Unfortunately, in Future Trunks’ timeline, Gohan and Videl never meet, as they’re both destroyed. Pan was never born, which is why Future Trunks was so surprised to meet her when he went back in time.
15 Her Age Was Changed Multiple Times
There’s a long list of why fans don’t like Funimation English dubs. They often make changes in the script to make dialogue more “Western-friendly.” One of the most annoying changes can be seen with the characters’ ages. In the Funimation dub, Pan’s age was changed to 4-years-old while in Japanese reference books and anime, it was stated she was five. In Dragon Ball GT, it’s stated that the series takes place five years after Dragon Ball Z, which would make her 10, then 11. Funimation’s dub changed the entire time frame of GT, making it take place ten years after DBZ instead. Pan wasn’t a pre-teen, but a 14 then 15-year-old child by the end of the GT series.
14 Lives For Over A Century
Dragon Ball Z doesn’t focus much on Pan. The entire series is primarily about Goku and his Super Saiyan friends. By the time she’s in preschool, the Z series is at its end. We later see Pan as a Grandmother who is over 100 years old. She’s still as youthful as ever. She attempts to train her grandson, Goku Jr., who just wants to play. In the movie A Hero’s Legacy, she inspires her grandson to train by searching for a cure for her illness. Of course, he succeeds, and Pan lives. Pan is also seen as an old woman at the end of Dragon Ball GT. Though the characters of Dragon Ball often get destroyed, we know that Pan survives to become a senior woman with at least one grandchild.
13 Doesn’t Want To Inherit A Legacy
The Z-Fighter children have it tough. They aren’t full-blooded Saiyans and have to train extra hard to be as great as their parents. Many of them, like Gohan, don’t want to spend the rest of their days fighting. Pan’s family has had a long legacy of being fighters. Her grandfather, Hercule, who is Videl’s father, was a hero and even had a city named after him. Pan’s father, Gohan, was a superhero long before he met his wife. Hercule makes it clear he wants her to carry on his legacy as a martial arts hero. Though she enjoys practicing, she admits she doesn’t want to inherit his legacy. She creates her future by becoming an instructor for the Pan Fighting Network.
12 Gets Embarrassed By Tacky Adults
Pan seems to get embarrassed when she sees adults posing or dancing. We can only imagine how mortified she becomes when she witnesses her parents transform into the Great Saiyaman and Great Saiyaman 2. Pan believes their gaudy costumes are ridiculous and their poses are tacky. She has no desire to become a crime fighter like her parents and grandfather. In Dragon Ball Online, she would later wear a costume to fight the Frieza Force. It wasn’t to be like her parents but to protect her identity. She didn’t want people to know she was Hercule’s granddaughter and profit off of her good deeds. She didn’t want to make money off of her established reputation and just wanted to destroy the enemy.
11 Can Be Her Own Worst Enemy
Pan is the granddaughter of one of the most powerful fighters on Earth, Goku. Even her father has proven himself in battle. When the Z-Fighters end up deserted on Rudeeze, Goku and Trunks discuss taking Pan home and taking Goten in her place. Pan overhears their conversation and is heartbroken.

Goku and Trunks see her determination and decide to keep traveling with Pan.
10 Made A Speedy Debut
By the time Dragon Ball Z ended, Pan was just barely appearing on-screen. We knew she was a silly, yet energetic little girl. We would later see her grow up in “A Hero’s Legacy” and the GT series. Dragon Ball Super changed the formula. Videl was shown giving birth to Pan in Super, compared to debuting the young girl at age four in DBZ. Pan made history by being the first of the GT characters to appear in the Super series. We get to witness how powerful she is when she’s still in diapers. Pan drives the Z-Fighters a bit crazy, and even Trunks is forced to babysit her while Gohan is at work. Thanks to Pan’s earlier debut, we may get to witness her rise to power compared to her DBZ counterpart.
9 Doesn’t Back Down From A Fight
Pan is already a young pre-teen in Dragon Ball Z, or a teenager if you watched the Funimation English dub. She wears her hair short, like her mother Videl, because she knows it can hinder in battle. She balances school work with dating. In one of her first appearances, she asks one of her classmates on a date to watch a movie. She doesn’t like waiting on the sidelines and will happily join any fight. Contrary to her personality, she prefers to date attractive boys who are gentle. Unfortunately, the boy she dates in GT, Poperu, can’t stand fighting. When Pan fights off bank robbers, Poperu runs away, not wanting to get involved. She gets annoyed when she realizes she scared him off by displaying her strength.
8 Was Used For Her Powers
Joining a fight against intergalactic threats means you’re going to get hurt or worse. Poor Pan has been absorbed three times during the series. She was turned into a doll during the fight with Ludd. Pan, along with Dolltaki, are then both absorbed by the gigantic mechanical doll so he can use their power. She was also absorbed during the battle against Naturon Shenron. He used Pan’s abilities to fight Goku. Pan was still conscious and told Goku to finish the creature off, but Goku didn’t want to lose her. He manages to save her before destroying the creature. In a comedic twist, Mr. Buu used Chocolate Beam on Pan and Hercule and ate them. He didn’t want to hurt them, just keep them safe from Baby Vegeta. Mr. Buu was able to restore them at a later, safer time.
7 Her Name Has Three Different Meanings
Thankfully Pan wasn’t named Gomen like her father and uncle. Her name still has three different meanings that few fans know. Pan is the Japanese word for bread, which keeps with the tradition for food based names in the Son family. Pan was also a Greek God responsible for the wild, shepherds, and flocks. He is well known for having half the hindquarters and horns of a goat.

The name also is in tradition with characters being named after musical instruments, such as Piccolo and Cymbal. 6 Takes Friendship To A Whole New Power Level
Being the first granddaughter of the Dragon Ball series, Pan has interacted with all of the Z-Fighters and even fought beside them. She develops a close relationship with Vegeta and his romantic partner Bulma, likely because she befriends their children Trunks and Bulla. In Dragon Ball Fusion, Pan gains the ability to fuse by using a Metamo-Ring. Bulla and Pan transform into Bulpan. This fusion is possible due to their friendship and Saiyan blood. Pan also gains the ability to fuse with her mother Videl to transform into Pandel. Videl was once a powerful fighter, and it’s displayed in her fused form with her child. These fusions wouldn’t be possible if not for their close bonds shown throughout the Dragon Ball series.
5 Didn’t Spend Her Days Training
Pan is Goku’s first granddaughter and Gohan’s only child. Since she’s a girl, they treat her with kid gloves. They admit to spoiling her and not forcing her to train like they were as children. Pan displays not only her power as an infant but also her stubborn behavior. When Future Trunks arrives during the Future Trunks saga, at first he believes she’s like any other child. She hits him in the stomach, which makes him wince in pain and realizes that she truly is Gohan’s offspring. Gohan later admits he doesn’t have the heart to discipline her when she misbehaves. Years of letting the girl to what she wants led Pan to be a bit bratty. Luckily, she grows up to be headstrong with a heart of gold like her grandfather and dad.
4 Took On The World At 5-Years-Old
When Pan is five years old, she enters her first World Tournament. She is already a powerhouse at her age and wants to prove it to the world. Pan ends up entering the 28th installment at Age 784. She effortlessly defeated Wild Tiger, an adult man, with just two punches.

At the end of Dragon Ball Z, it’s shown that she defeated her uncle Goten as well, but it was declared an unofficial match. Pan manages to make it to the last round and defeats her grandfather, Hercule. Though, few just believe that he let her win and the crowd believes he’s an adorable grandpa. The tournament was eventually canceled anyway due to Goku and Uub taking off. Hercule still retained his title as Champion.
3 Not Her Fault She Couldn’t Transform
Pan has 1/4 Saiyan blood running through her system. Others with even less, like Goku Jr., can transform into Super Saiyan mode. For decades, it was believed that one of the requirements to transform was being male. The rule was unfortunate for Pan since she aspired to transform and looked up to other Super Saiyans.
Akira Toriyama later admitted that it had nothing to do with Pan’s power level. The reason was simply that he’d never drawn a female Super Saiyan and didn’t know how to proceed. Dragon Ball GT’s Producer Kozo Morishita thought about it differently. Pan was forced to be a damsel-in-distress to power-up Goku. When Goku sees his granddaughter in trouble, it fuels his emotions to transform.
2 Doesn’t Need A Hero
Goku and Piccolo take over babysitting duties when Gohan and Videl have to travel on business. Pan manages to leave the house and ends up getting kidnapped by Pilaf, Shu, and Mai. The trio hears that Pan is Goku’s granddaughter and get scared. They abandon their kidnapping plans and take off in their Pilaf Machine. Mai discovered that Pan is still on-board. In a panic, Pilaf hits a self-destruct button on the ship. They realize that Pan is using her ki to keep them all safe. She’s happy she can fly in space and drops the Pilaf gang back on earth. Goku and Piccolo were frantically searching for her the entire time but were relieved when she safely returned. Pan flies back home, just in time for Gohan and Videl’s return.
1 Was The First To Take To The Skies
Baby Pan had more adventures as an adult than her teenage and elderly forms experienced. Not only did she save herself from being kidnapped, but she developed her powers without training. She tapped into her ki quicker than the other Z-Fighters. Not even Goku was able to transform into Super Saiyan form until he was an adult. Pan taught herself how to fly before she was able to speak or use a potty. She learned the Power-Up technique, which enabled her to increase her power level to become stronger in battle. Of course, Baby Pan just uses the ability to fly around and cause trouble for her loved ones.
Pan demonstrated her strength quicker than other long-running characters on the show, proving that she’s one of the strongest Z-Fighters of the Dragon Ball series.
