Dragon Ball Super Hero Provides More Evidence For Cells Return

The Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero teaser trailer has provided more evidence for Perfect Cell’s return to the franchise. For a long time now, Cell has been a favorite choice for Super Hero’s villain. However, there wasn’t really a sense that the franchise was ready to bring the character back.

Since Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was first announced, Cell was one of a handful of established villains whose name often came up in conversations about who the antagonist could be. He and Cooler were arguably the ones that generated the most discussion. Hype for a potential appearance for Cell greatly increased once it was revealed that Gohan’s granddaughter (Pan) and mentor (Piccolo) were involved in the story. Plus, Gohan’s stint as Great Saiyaman made it seem like the title might be about him. The idea that the movie might focus on Gohan led to a number of theories that the villain he killed in Dragon Ball Z – Perfect Cell – would be back for revenge.

Cell getting brought back to life in Dragon Ball Super’s second movie now feels a bit more believable. In the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero trailer, it was revealed that the Red Ribbon Army will somehow play a role the Z-Warriors’ next adventure. If the anime is ever going to resurrect Cell, it stands to reason that it would need brilliant minds like those that work with the Red Ribbon Army to pull it off. After all, it was their scientist, Dr. Gero, who created Cell in the first place. If there’s an organization out there that would be capable of restoring him, there wouldn’t be a better candidate for the job than the Red Ribbon Army.

It’s important to keep in mind that as humans, the Red Ribbon Army’s only hope of challenging Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo on a physical level are androids or robots. Since they’re a group that bases most of their plans on technology, it makes sense that an android is the sort of villain that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will end up throwing at the Z-Warriors. Presumably, that’s what Super Hero’s mysterious new characters – Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 – are, but that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. Regardless, they may not be the only threats the Red Ribbon Army will create for the main characters. A rebuilt Perfect Cell made from his old DNA could turn out to be their secret weapon.

Due to the history he shares with Gohan, Cell’s return could come with a ton of storytelling potential. He’d also explain the movie’s emphasis on Piccolo and Pan, who could become a part of Cell’s plan to take vengeance on his killer. If the Red Ribbon Army really does revive Cell and make him more powerful than before, he could serve as the ultimate test for Gohan in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Ahead of the tournament, Gohan promised to get stronger so that he can protect his family from future threats. Cell coming back could deliver a satisfying payoff for that storyline.
