To celebrate Apex Legends release on Steam, players will receive gun charms that are inspired by Half-Life and Portal for free.

The release of Apex Legends on Steam is slate for fall with no precise date given quite yet. It’s one of several titles that EA has decided to release on Steam as part of the new partnership agreement they have with Valve.

According to DOT Esports, Apex Legends will have three gun charms available for free. One charm is Wattson holding a Companion Cube from Portal 2. It’s a cube with hearts on the sides that players used to navigate the puzzles in Portal 2 – said to hold the bodies of previous test subjects. Also from Portal 2 is a PotatOS gun charm, which is a reference to GLaDOS, the AI antagonist of the series.

The third charm is a reference to the Half-Life series – Octane infected by a deadly Headcrab. A Headcrab is a parasitic organism that attaches itself to a person’s skull, seizing control of the host’s body and causing a variety of mutations.

The three rewards will be given to players automatically when they log into the game via Steam, but will only be available to snag for a limited time.

The partnership is one fans have been looking forward to for some time. Steam has long been used by PC gamers to access and play their favorite games, but some developers have stubbornly refused to release their titles on the platform.

EA was such a developer that exerted a considerable effort to push their own digital platform, Origin. According to EA’s blog, the standoff broke with the release of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. It’s also been revealed that players will be able to interact with each other regardless of whether they’re on Origin or Steam.

This is great news for games like Apex Legends, which will find a newly dedicated PC gaming community on Steam. Cross-platform support is also a fantastic idea as players won’t feel pressured to move to one or the other to play, too.

It’s a strong move by both companies that further breathes life into Apex Legends as it continues to make a name for itself in the battle royale space.
