The team behind Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is looking at the series through a different lens than other Dragon Ball games. Rather than focus on the huge battles, they want us to have the experience of living in the Dragon Ball world. Players will be able to eat, train, and travel to pass the time in between big events like the Saiyan arrival and appearance of Cell. Keeping that in mind, fans should have one question on their minds: what does that mean for the filler episodes?

It’s already been confirmed that Kakarot will include one of the most hilarious filler episodes of all time – the time Goku learned to drive. Players will apparently be a bit more successful than the Saiyan in this endeavor, as they’ll get free reign to drive around the map. So with the developers generously giving us this deep dive into one filler, can we hope for more? What about the Garlic Jr. Saga?

For a quick refresher, the Garlic Jr. Saga was a storyline exclusive to the Dragon Ball Z anime. It saw Garlic Jr. from the movie Dead Zone return from his imprisonment to seek revenge on the Z Fighters. The problem was that it was right after the Frieza Saga, so Goku was lost in space and Vegeta went off to find him. This put young Gohan in a starring role as he had to fend off the villain with Piccolo and Krillin as backup.

The absence of Goku means that the Garlic Jr. Saga probably won’t make it into Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The game is being pitched as a chance to live as Goku, so we can’t really do something Goku wasn’t even around for.

That said, Kakarot’s preview footage displays the ability to play as other characters. Instances of fighting the Saibamen as Yamcha and company, as well as playing as Future Trunks, have been shown. It looks like the game will adapt events that Goku missed by just letting players use a different character. To that end, Garlic Jr. is definitely possible. It would be a prime chance to play as Gohan.

Fortunately, Garlic Jr. fans won’t have to wait long to find out. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot comes out on January 17.
