Skyrim’s Civil War May Be Dwarfed By Starfield’s Epic Conflict

Skyrim’s civil war is one of its biggest questlines and a major part of the game, but Starfield has the potential to take it to a galactic scale.

One of the major driving forces in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is its bloody civil war between the Imperial Empire and the Stormcloak Rebellion, but Bethesda’s newest upcoming IP Starfield just might put that conflict to shame. Starfield has already been likened to Skyrim by Bethesda, so it’s likely that the game will have a war that’s just as big as – if not bigger than – the previous mainline Elder Scrolls title. How big has yet to be revealed, but given the fact that Starfield takes place in the vast reaches of space, it has the potential to be literally infinite.

When players first enter Skyrim, they quickly learn that the country is in the midst of a civil war between the Imperial and Stormcloak armies, largely due to the Thalmor’s insistence that the worship of the Nords’ hero-god, Talos, be outlawed. Starfield’s confirmed factions seem to mimic Skyrim’s somewhat. In an overview trailer for the game, Starfield director Emil Pagliarulo describes an area called The Settled Systems, and two factions known as the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective. These are stated to be the biggest factions among the many in the game, and were engaged in a war known as the Colony War 20 years before the start of the game, despite having an uneasy peace when the game starts.

How long the Colony War lasted and how big it was has not yet been revealed, but given the information available so far, it’s likely that another war will take place at some point during the events of the game. The main character will also likely play a major part in that war, and be able to join one faction or the other and achieve victory for them just as players do in Skyrim. Bethesda has revealed Starfield cities and settings for some of these factions. Unlike in Skyrim, however, players will be fighting in the infinite void of space, so the battlegrounds could span planets, if not entire galaxies.

Skyrim’s Imperials And Starfield’s United Colonies

Little has been revealed about Starfield and its factions so far, but it has been revealed that the United Colonies is the biggest one in the game, in terms of military strength and political influence. In that respect, they seem to be akin to Skyrim’s Imperials, who have maintained the biggest empire in Tamriel for over 300 years. Both seem deeply embroiled in politics and procedure, and seem to be the more organized of the two factions. The United Colonies’ capital, New Atlantis, is said to be a bustling city with inhabitants from all walks of life. As one of the three major locations Bethesda has revealed for Starfield so far, it’s more than likely a major presence in the game.

If the similarities continue, players could see the United Colonies becoming oppressive and heavy-handed just as the Imperials were, although whether or not they would be controlled by a more powerful organization, as the Imperials are by the Thalmor, remains to be seen. It’s too early to say which faction will be the aggressor in whatever conflict the two have, if any, but it could very well be the United Colonies. A desire to consolidate power in The Settled Systems, to conquer the Freestar Collective and use their supplies and manpower to drive off the malicious Crimson Fleet, or simple greed and pride could all be motivators if the United Colonies decide to end their truce. They could be led by some form of council, and perhaps make decisions based on strategy and logic. Starfield being described as “Skyrim in space” could very well hold true here.

Skyrim’s Stormcloaks Could Inspire Starfield’s Freestar Collective

Just as the United Colonies seem to resemble Skyrim’s Imperials, the Freestar Collective could take inspiration from the Stormcloaks. The Freestar Collective is the second-largest faction in the game and is composed of a loose alliance of three star systems, and from what’s been revealed so far, they place heavy importance on freedom and individuality. Their capital city, Akila, is walled off – and for good reason. It’s stated that beyond the walls lie an alien race known as the Ashta, which are described as “a cross between a wolf and a velociraptor” in one of the Starfield trailers released by Bethesda. From screenshots and trailers, it would seem that they’re much less organized than the United Colonies, just as the Stormcloaks are. Starfield’s players may fly to their planets if they prefer a rougher, more unorganized faction.

The Freestar Collective, if it continues to mirror the Stormcloaks, would likely be a loosely organized military with a focus on power and personal strength. The Ashta may be seen as a challenge, and killing one a rite of passage. Just like the Stormcloaks, they may start conflict with the United Colonies in order to preserve their freedom and traditions, or in response to oppression, perceived or not, on the UC’s part. They would likely have either one person or a small group of people leading them, perhaps one for each star system in the alliance for a total of three. Their tactics may be intended to inspire rather than gain a tactical advantage, such as winning an unlikely victory against an area that doesn’t offer much strategic value. Starfield’s universe will let players play as they like, at least according to the information that’s available, so this type of strategy is possible.

Will Players Be Able To Stay Neutral In Starfield?

In Skyrim, the Dargonborn is able to avoid siding with the Stormcloaks or the Imperials, but the conflict will carry on without their intervention. It’s possible, though, that Starfield could allow players to resolve a potential conflict without having to join either side. Bethesda games have consistently placed player choice as a priority, so being able to walk the middle ground in whatever conflict the United Colonies and Freestar Collective engage may be a potential option. It’s rare that the conflicts in Bethesda’s games are ever black and white, so players who don’t fully believe in the ideals of either faction, whatever they end up being, may appreciate having another route to take. Based on everything known about Starfield and its timeline so far, it seems likely that neutrality is an option.

Staying neutral in Starfield may very well be involved heavily with the game’s starting faction, Constellation. It’s said to be devoted to the exploration of space, so politics and military might seem like things that they would take little interest in. Maintaining peace is another one of their goals according to the information that’s been released so far, so ending the conflict between the two biggest factions in The Settled Systems without one side conquering the other may be a major part of their questline. Starfield could very well set players up to maintain peace and order over choosing to side with one of the other two major factions.
