The majority of the magic items listed in Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks have a modifier that ranges from +1 to +5. However, there are a handful of weapons in D&D that go beyond +5, with a rare few reaching the fabled +7 modifier.

The modifier system is used to determine how powerful a magic item is in D&D. In the case of weapons, the modifier refers to how the magical enchantment makes it easier for them to hit foes and how it will deal more damage on a successful blow. The stronger the weapon, the higher the modifier. The majority of magic items are found in treasure hoards, but there are some editions of D&D where players can forge their own weapons, so long as they have the gold to spend on materials. There are also spells that can create temporary enchantments on normal weapons, so that they can function as magic items for a short period of time.

+1 weapons are a common sight in D&D games, but there are some fabled blades that have a +5 enchantment, such as the Holy Avenger when wielded by a Paladin. The standard rulebooks only include rules for weapons that hit a maximum modifier of +5, but there are some unique magic items that go even further.

Dungeons & Dragons’ Epic Level Weapons

The most famous example of a +6 weapon in D&D is the Sword of Kas, which was forged by Vecna for his lieutenant Kas the Bloody-Handed. Kas would eventually turn on Vecna and use the mighty blade to cut out Vecna’s eye and slice off his hand. The Eye & Hand of Vecna would go on to become powerful artifacts on their own. The Sword of Kas was a sentient blade with an evil personality, which meant that its power came with some steep drawbacks.

The third edition of D&D had a rulebook called the Epic Level Handbook, which featured content for players who wanted campaigns that went beyond level 20. The Epic Level Handbook had a section dedicated to epic items, which included named weapons with a +7 bonus. The Mace of Ruin was a +7 heavy mace, which ignored the hardness/damage reduction scores of buildings and could deal critical hits to constructs. There was also the Unholy Despoiler, which acts as a +7 longsword of unholy power when wielded by a Blackguard.

It’s also possible for epic characters to forge these weapons, but that extra few points of magical damage better be worth it, as the Mace of Ruin costs half a million gold pieces to make, and the Unholy Despoiler costs two and a half million gold pieces to make. This means there are official +7 weapons in Dungeons & Dragons lore, but very few players could ever hope to wield them in battle.
