10 Akira (1988)

Akira is a 1988 Japanese animated post-apocalyptic film which was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto. The film production budget was $9 million, which is announced to be the most expensive produced anime film of its time. Akira to this day remains one of the most lively, technically fulfilled animation ever made, and it can be credited with delivering cartoons to a very global and sophisticated audience.

9 Birdy the Mighty (1985 – 1996)

Birdy the Mighty is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masami Yuki. The attempt to write the story ran from 1985 to 1988. And finally, in 1996, the story was produced into an Original Video Animation that was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

The character that we see in this manga series was designed and animated by Kumiko Takahashi. In the storyline Birdy is an undercover, interstellar agent on a mission to capture the most dangerous criminals ever seen in the galaxy.

8 Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999)

Cowboy Bebop is a Japanese animated science-fiction TV series, that has been animated by Sunrise, the screen was written by Keiko Nobumoto, the characters were designed by Toshihiro Kawamoto, and composed by Yoko Kanno. The Cowboy Bebop series premiere was in Japan on April 3, 1998, on TV Tokyo it broadcasting only twelve episodes, and later on, it was canceled. Cowboy Bebop series showed a lot of drugs and violence, which came at a bad time in Japan’s history. Due to this show, an increase in violence was seen in schools and the whole country on edge, so they blamed it on the show and canceled it. But despite Japan’s history, the show is worth watching.

7 Dororo (2019)

Dororo is an anime series, produced in 2019 and based on the manga of the same name by Osamu Tezuka. The new adaptation diverges from the source but it follows the basic proposition of the manga. The storyline is about a father in a hunt for great power, is cruel enough to give parts of his new-born son to a host of demons. Years after when his son is of age, he battles those demons to regain what is rightfully his.

6 Flame of Recca (1997-1998)

Flame of Recca is a Japanese manga series that was written and illustrated by Nobuyuki Anzai. Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday is the one that serialized, with329 individual chapters of the series which were compiled into 33 tankōbon volumes by Shogakukan.

To this day the series is popular and they also produced two video games and other merchandise about Flame of Recca. Later on, the series was adapted into a 42-episode anime series by Studio Pierrot and aired on Fuji TV from July 1997 to July 1998. As its fame grew in June 2013, the manga Flame of Recca had over 25 million copies in circulation.

5 Grand Blue (2018)

Grand Blue is a Japanese manga series written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka, which also goes by the name Grand Blue Dreaming, It has been serialized in the manga magazine good! Afternoon since April 2014 and it has been collected in fifteen tankōbon volumes. For Grand Blue, a live-action film adaptation was originally registered to release on May 29, 2020, but it has been postponed like everything else due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4 Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)

Great Teacher Onizuka a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa and officially known as GTO.

The show focuses on a 22-year-old ex-gangster member and virgin known as Eikichi Onizuka, who becomes a teacher at a private middle school.

3 Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (2016)

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is an anime series produced by Wit Studio, directed by Tetsurō Araki and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi. The series premiere was on Fuji TV with a total of 12 episodes. The series is beyond exciting especially for this period since it is about a serious virus that is appearing during the industrial revolution.

2 Made in Abyss (2017)

Made in Abyss is a Japanese manga series produced by Akihito Tsukushi and published by Takeshob. The show has been serialized online in digital publication Web Comic Gamma since 2012 and has been collected into eight volumes.

The show is about a girl and the robot that she owns, both of them are in search of her mother, who’s lost within a vast chasm.

1 Nichijou (2011)

Nichijou written and illustrated by Keiichi Arawi is a Japanise comedy manga series in ten chapters. Set in a suburban Japanese town, Nichijou is filled with a group of students, featuring moments from their everyday lives that cope with normal predicaments, but they all too find themselves in abnormal situations.
