While players are able to customize their characters in Dungeons & Dragons through elements such as their class and race, when it comes to wielding magic, one of the most defining elements of a character is often the spells they wield. A character’s choice of spells dictates much of what they are capable of doing both in and out of combat, their utility in a party, as well as helping to characterize them. While one character may gravitate towards the employment of more support-based magic, another may choose to use highly damaging spells, or those that create illusions.

While the majority of D&D’s spells were introduced in the Player’s Handbook, every so often, additional spells are added to the game. Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a recently released book for D&D’s fifth edition that focuses on the Dragons of the game. While much of the book details new and previously existing types of dragons, it also includes seven new spells that are influenced by dragons, potentially providing a spellcaster with draconic flair. D&D’s spells greatly vary in quality with abilities ranging from niche to somewhat overpowered, and the same can be said for these new spells. So today, we’re going to see which of the new spells from Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons are the most useful!

Before we begin, we should state that we are accounting for more than a spell’s abilities in a vacuum, and will be judging them based on availability to a character as well as how they fair when compared to other spells of the same spell level.

7 Nathair’s Mischief

A second-level spell available to Bards, Sorcerers, and Wizards, Nathair’s Mischief is a uniquely unpredictable spell of fey and draconic magic, producing one of four effects at random. While these effects are far from terrible, lack of consistency makes it difficult to use reliably or effectively.

Targeting a twenty-foot cube within sixty feet of the caster, the caster must roll 1d4 to dictate if creatures within the spell’s area of effect must make a saving throw to prevent themselves from being charmed, blinded, incapacitated, or discover if the area of effect is simply turned into difficult terrain. While none of these effects are useless, it’s difficult to form a strategy around an effect that even the caster can’t predict.

6 Raulothim’s Psychic Lance

Raulothim’s Psychic Lance is a fourth-level spell available to Bards, Sorcerers, Wizards, and Warlocks, allowing them to channel psionic energy comparable to that of a Gem Dragon. Upon casting this spell, its caster can target either a creature they can see or a creature whose name they say that is within the spell’s range, causing a psychic lance to be shot from the caster’s forehead into the target.



The target must roll an intelligence saving throw or sustain 7d6 damage and become incapacitated until the caster’s next turn, taking half as much damage on a successful save. While the incapacitation and ability to hit invisible targets is nice, other spells at the same level – and even lower levels like Fireball and Lightning Bolt – can deal more damage and hit several targets, while Raulothim’s Psychic Lance can only hit a single creature.

5 Draconic Transformation

Just as the name would suggest, Draconic Transformation is a seventh-level spell available to Druids, Sorcerers, and Wizards that allows them to temporarily take on the attributes of a dragon. Seventh-level spells tend to be incredibly powerful, and this one is no exception, offering great flexibility to the caster.

For up to one minute, the caster gains a sixty-foot flying speed, blindsight of thirty feet, and access to a breath attack that can deal up to 6d8 force damage to all creatures in a sixty-foot line that fail a dexterity saving throw. While this offers a lot of utility regarding both damage output and mobility, other options at the same level provide superior mobility or superior damage. This means that when casting this spell, you’re prioritizing flexibility over sheer damage or mobility.

4 Fizban’s Platinum Shield

A sixth-level abjuration spell exclusive to Sorcerers and Wizards, Fizban’s Platinum Shield is an impressive defensive object any party would benefit from having. Targeting one’s self or another target within sixty feet, this spell grants several great defensive buffs, cloaking the target in the platinum light of a metallic dragon.

The target counts as being in half cover, improving their AC by +2, they gain resistance to acid, cold, fire, lightning, and poison damage, and if the target would succeed a dexterity saving throw to take half the damage of an effect, they instead prevent all of said damage!


3 Rime’s Binding Ice

While Spells like Fizban’s Platinum Shield and Draconic Transformation boast a great deal of value, Rime’s Binding Ice is capable of putting in a lot of work for an accessible second-level spell. Exclusive to Sorcerers and Wizards, this icy spell produces a thirty-foot cone, forcing each creature in its area of effect to make a constitution saving throw. Those who failed this saving throw sustain 3d8 cold damage – half as much on a successful save – and have their speed reduced to zero due to growing structures of ice. With the inability to move, this makes foes much more easily manageable.

While a creature whose movement was reduced this way can spend their action breaking out of the ice, this means that this spell effectively takes away an affected creature’s action for a turn in addition to dealing damage.

2 Ashardalon’s Stride

A spell reflecting the ability of fire-based dragons, Ashardalon’s Stride is a stellar third-level mobility spell that is also capable of dealing damage. Available to Artificers, Rangers, Sorcerers, and Wizards, this spell can be cast as a bonus action, increasing the caster’s movement by twenty, and preventing them from being targeted by opportunity attacks.

While this is already comparable to an improved Longstrider, whenever the caster moves within five feet of another creature for the first time on a turn, the creature immediately takes 1d6 fire damage without requiring a saving throw. This spell even scaled well as its caster levels up, increasing both the damage output and mobility increase of the caster when used via higher spell slot levels.

1 Summon Draconic Spirit

Available to Druids, Sorcerers, and Wizards, Summon Draconic Spirit is a powerful and Flexible fifth-level spell that can be used in a wide variety of ways. Capable of lasting for up to an hour, this spell manifests a draconic spirit with potency proportional to the spell level used to cast the spell.

This draconic spirit can be commanded with a bonus action, possessing several melee attacks and even a breath weapon. As this dragon has a sixty-foot flying speed and is large-sized, it can easily be utilized as a mount for its caster. Upon being summoned, the caster even chooses a type of resistance the dragon has, with the caster temporarily gaining said resistance as well. As the dragon spirit even has blindsight, this spell allows its caster to utilize much of the same utility as the seventh-level Draconic Transformation, but for an hour rather than a minute, and for a fifth level-spell slot rather than a seventh-level spell slot.
