One of the best things about Elden Ring is its versatility. You get to play whatever character you want, whether they look ridiculous, badass, or just like you. You can also fight however you want, and sometimes you just don’t want to get up close and personal with that terrifying boss.

This is where incantations come in. Essentially, incantations are spells powered by faith and can be discovered and learned from a variety of NPC’s dotted throughout the map, or in some hidden spots so keep an eye out. If spells and incantations are the way you want to play Elden Ring, these are the ones you just have to have on your roster.

10 Cure Poison

One of the most frustrating aspects of fighting a tough enemy, or even just a smaller one, is when they poison you. You end up bearing witness to your poor health-bar dropping much quicker than you wanted it to with nothing you can do to stop it. Luckily, there is a way to stop it, and it’s relatively cheap too.

At its simple description, the Cure Poison incantation stops any poison effects given to you. Now that in itself is useful, but it’s the cheap cost and the fact that you can cast this while running away from the enemy that sets it above many other incantations.

The Cure Poison incantation is found at the Roundtable Hold where you can talk to Brother Corhyn and buy it for 1000 runes.

9 Glintstone Breath

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many ways in which a pure spellcaster can do a horrendous amount of damage. Therefore, it’s important you grab onto any incantations that do some good damage and use them as much as you can. This is exactly why Glintstone breath is so powerful and perfect for any enemy that’s resistant to fire or holy damage. It’s also a very cool spell to cast that makes you look like a dragon. What’s not to love?

The Glintstone Breath incantation turns you into a terrifying dragon who spews magical fire towards an unsuspecting enemy. It does an impressive amount of damage considering it costs 40 stamina to cast.

The Glintstone Breath incantation can be found at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion just by the Dragon Communion Alter and can be brought for one Dragon Heart.

8 Rejection

Sometimes you don’t need to have spells that mitigate effects or do massive damage. After all, as a spellcaster it’s vital you have a range of spells at your disposal to allow yourself to easily deal with any situation that comes your way. This is what makes Rejection such a wonderful incantation to use.

This wonderful incantation allows you to unleash a powerful shockwave onto the enemy, often sending them a few feet back and, if you’re lucky, knocking them prone. Or at the very least it will get them away from you for a while. Perfect if you need to do a little crowd control.

7 Flame Sling

When it comes to casting spells or incantations in pretty much any game where it’s available, everyone wants to get fireball. It always does huge damage and is incredibly fun to cast. This is entirely the case with Flame Sling since it’s essentially the fireball of Elden Ring.

The Flame Sling incantation produces a pretty sizable fireball and lets you throw it towards the enemy. The more you charge it, the more powerful and deadly it becomes. All that and you’d expect it to be expensive and time-consuming to cast, but it’s quick, cheap, and can even be chain cast if you have enough Faith for it.

The Flame Sling Incantation is brought from Brother Corhyn at the Roundtable hold for 800 runes.

6 Catch Flame

Fire is one of the more entertaining incantation types to use, it’s usually effective and looks pretty cool when you cast it. This might be why most of the more powerful incantations focus on fire. Just like Catch Flame.

Catch Flame is one of the most powerful and damaging incantations in Elden Ring, despite its short range. It’s also the starting spell for the Prophet Class, so it’s ideal if you’re struggling with picking a class.

Pick up the Catch Flame Incantation at the Roundtable hold for 600 runes. Just look for Brother Corhyn.

5 The Flame Of Frenzy

Another powerful fire incantation. This time with fire bolts instead of real flames. The Flame of Frenzy Incantation is perfect for damage dealing from a distance. It’s the kind of spell that’s deadly to smaller enemies yet still deals a good amount of damage to a tougher boss, making it effective throughout the game.

The Flame of Frenzy is best used when you have time to fully charge it since you’ll get more bolts and a higher range. If you do then you’ll see a large amount of what can only be described as fire lightning bolts come out of your eyes and into the enemy. It does give you a bit of madness, but for that damage, it’s definitely worth it.

You’ll need to fight rats in the Callu Baptismal Church within the Weeping Peninsula to get this incantation.

4 Greyoll’s Roar

While Greyroll’s Roam may be a little expensive to cast, it’s one of those incantations that is just undeniably worth the cost. After all, who doesn’t want to inherit the power of a legendary elder dragon?

This AOE spell doesn’t necessarily do any real damage, but sometimes you don’t need it to. Sometimes, all you need it to do is debuff the enemies who are a little too strong for your liking. Greyroll’s Roar transforms you into a powerful dragon who roars, which reduces the enemy’s attack power and defense, letting you get in there again and wipe them out. It’s recommended you charge this up and use it at the start of the battle as it takes a while to charge and is costly to use.

Head to the Cathedral of Dragon Communion and spend three Dragon Hearts to get this incantation.

3 Heal

Who doesn’t need more health? Having a healing incantation by your side at all times is vital, which is what makes this so useful and powerful. It’s worth mentioning, however, that there are many healing incantations within Elden Ring, so it’s more of a personal opinion when finding the right one for you. But sometimes the simplest spells work the best. After all, they’re usually cheaper and quicker to use.

This is entirely the case with Heal. It’s got a moderate casting speed, but a good amount of health will be restored and it doesn’t cost much faith at all, meaning you can cast it for a longer time than many other healing spells. Whether it’s Heal or another version of this incantation, make sure you always have one ready.

2 Dragonfire

Turning into a badass dragon mid-battle is undeniably awesome to do. It’s fun, and the spells that allow you to do so are usually pretty powerful. This is exactly the case for both Dragonfire and Dragonice which are the same aside from the element, so the focus will be on Dragonfire.

This incantation is great for hitting more than one enemy at once, even if it does use a lot of faith to charge. That being said, it does an incredible amount of damage and the cast speed is quick.

Spend one Dragon Heart at the Church of Dragon Communion to get this incantation.

1 Beast Claw

Often rated as the best incantation in Elden Ring, Beast Claw is incredible. One use of it, and you’ll realize just how powerful this incantation can actually be. After all, who doesn’t want an AOE that does huge amounts of damage and takes very little to cast?

The Beast Claw incantation swipes claws at the enemy in a large cone often downing smaller enemies or sending the harder ones staggering back in confusion. You can also charge it if you want to do more power.

If you want Beast Claw you’ll need to complete Gurranq’s questline without killing him.
