It’s been close to 16 years since Grey’s Anatomy premiered and the ABC medical drama is still going strong. The series has included hundreds of characters in its storylines. Some have been likable while some have been downright annoying. But no matter what side of the likability coin each character has fallen on, they’ve all provided plenty of entertainment.

Given how deeply the characters are explored, viewers know a lot about the lives and personalities of the key doctors. However, the persona lives of the men and women who portray these intriguing characters remain a mystery to a lot of fans. It’s hard to imagine that the likes of Meredith, Cristina, and Derek don’t actually walk around hospital corridors in real-life.

10 Ellen Pompeo: 51, Married, 5’5, Scorpio

Having appeared in all 17 seasons, Pompeo (Meredith Grey) is one of the two longest-serving cast members in the medical drama series. Being the lead actor in one of the most popular TV shows has its perks and one of them is a good salary. Pompeo has appeared in a couple of Forbes lists of the highest-earning celebrities.

Pompeo has been married to Chris Ivery since 2007. The couple has 2 children. At 5’5, she is short compared to most of her colleagues. Though she has never been nominated for an Emmy, Pompeo has had 23 award nominations from different organizations for her work in Grey’s Anatomy.

9 Justin Chambers: 50, Married, 5’9, Cancer

Though he went to film school, Chambers (Alex Karev) spent much of his early years as a model, posing for brands such as Armani, Calvin Klein, and Dolce & Gabbana. Most of his roles outside Grey’s Anatomy have been minor ones.

He might have plenty of relationship struggles as Dr. Alex Karev but in real life, he’s got it figured out. Chambers has been married to Keisha for close to 27 years. He met her during her days as a modeling agency broker. The two have five children together. A staunch Christian, Chambers engages in charity work with the Pentecostal Christian Church

Like Oprah, Wilson (Miranda Beiley) has chosen to date but not get married. This is the fact that she revealed during her interview with Parade Magazine. She has been with her partner Ben Warren for 32 years. The couple has three children.

She is also 51 years old like Ellen Pompeo and is one of the few cast members to appear in every season. For her work, Wilson has been nominated for an Emmy four times. At 4’9, she is not only the shortest cast member but one of the shortest actors in Hollywood. Other notable actors whose height is below 5 feet are Danny Devito and Jada Pinkett.

7 James Pickens Jr.: 66, Married, 6’0, Scorpio

Pickens Jr (Richard Webber) has more film and TV credits than any other cast member. He has appeared in TV shows such as The X-Files, where he played an FBI deputy director, and movies such as Menace II Society. Pickens Jr has always been typecast in positions of authority throughout his career. Most of his roles involve him being a police boss.

Born in Canada, Oh acquired US citizenship in 2018. Just as Preston left Cristina at the altar, Oh has also had to break up with a lover. She was married to filmmaker Alexander Payne for two years. Sadly, they divorced in 2006. She is currently said to be dating Russian artist Lev Rukhin.

5 Patrick Dempsey: 55, Married, 5’9, Capricorn

Wondering what Dempsey (Derek Shephard) has been up to ever since he left the show. Well, not much, but in 2020, he landed the lead role in the financial thriller series Devils.

Derek might have died as a result of an accident but Dempsey does enjoy racing in real life. He competed at the 2011 Rolex 24 at Daytona and also has his own Dempsey Racing Team. Born in Scotland, Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) became a US Citizen in 2015. Outside Grey’s Anatomy, he is best known for his role of Lucius Vorenus in the HBO historical series Rome. He has also done voice work for the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare.

At 6’0, he is one of the taller cast members. The actor has been married twice and has three kids. He married Jane Parker back in 1999 but they got divorced in 2017. He married Arielle Goldrath, a chef, shortly after his divorce.

Most good-looking male actor in the series? There is a reason he has modeled for Levi’s and Tomi Hilfiger. Williams (Jackson Avery) has done a lot outside the show. Sara Drew (April Kepner) is one cast member that has been deeply missed ever since she left the show. She went on to have a cameo in another medical drama series—CBS’s Miami Medical. 1 Jessica Capshaw: 44, Married, 5’4, Leo

It’s hard to imagine that Capshaw was only meant to appear in three episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. She was phenomenal as Arizona. Sadly, her character had to be cut off. A statement from ABC cited creative reasons. Her other notable role is that of Jamie Stringer in the legal drama The Practice.

At 5’4, Capshaw is one of the shorter cast members though this is hard to notice on the screen. She is married to Christopher Gavigan. The couple has been together since 2004. Together, they have four children.
