Of course, at the top of most players’ minds in this field would be Skyrim, the latest and most popular mainline game in the series. One of Skyrim’s most iconic and popular NPCs, Paarthurnax is a pivotal character in the game’s main questline, with players getting to decide their fate at the end.
Paarthurnax is a benevolent dragon that aids the Dragonborn. Not only is he an excellent ally, but he also speaks in a gentle, grandfatherly voice provided by Charles Martinet, the famous voice of Super Mario himself. As a dragon, Paarthurnax also plays an important role in Skyrim, providing the Dragonborn with plenty of information regarding the villainous dragon Alduin, the story’s final boss. Yet despite his kindness, one of the Dragonborn’s other allies, the Blades, wishes to see him dead. With the gravity of this decision, one has to wonder if Elder Scrolls 6 will confirm a concrete decision on the topic.
Over the course of the game, the Dragonborn will meet Paarthurnax, who acts as a mentor figure, and The Blades, who swear loyalty to them. However, at one point during the story, The Blades will learn that Paarthurnax once worked alongside Alduin in the distant past. Despite being told that the old dragon is now attempting to stop his vicious former friend, the Blades refuse to help unless Paarthurnax is killed. At that point, the Dragonborn is forced to choose between two parties that had been friendly to them until that point.
Elder Scrolls 6 Should Keep Paarthurnax Alive
Sparing Paarthurnax is an overwhelmingly popular choice made by Skyrim players for a number of factors, and one that should be duly reflected in The Elder Scrolls 6. For one, Paarthurnax is far more popular than the Blades, Skyrim’s ancient intelligence service. Delphine, the leader of the Blades, is seen as quite unpleasant by a number of fans, with her insistence on Paarthurnax’s death being one of the major reasons for what perception. Another point lies in the fact that not killing Paarthurnax benefits the player in Skyrim. Sparing him will allow the player to use Paarthurnax’s meditation to strengthen their dragon shouts, as well as receive assistance from the Greybeards in finding more word walls. On the other hand, killing Paarthurnax will give the Dragonborn a permanent stat boost when fighting dragons, but at the cost of losing Paarthurnax and the Greybeards. In essence, the player trades two excellent allies for a minor buff, and that is a very bad trade.
There is one more aspect to Paarthurnax’s survival that may warrant revisiting in the future, because his presence impacts significant events in Skyrim’s history. If Paarthurnax is killed, then a peace treaty cannot be arranged between the Imperials and the Stormcloaks, since the Dragonborn is banned from High Hrothgar, where the treaty would take place. The civil war of Skyrim is undoubtedly a major point in the Elder Scrolls timeline. In addition, if he survives, Paarthurnax will state his intention to teach restraint to the other dragons and bring forth peace, which could impact the presence of dragons in future games.
Paarthurnax is a remarkable figure in Skyrim, and he plays a significant role in Skyrim’s history, living or dead. Considering that The Elder Scrolls has not been shy about referencing past games before, there is plenty of reason for Paarthurnax’s fate, as well as the aftermath, to be recognized in Elder Scrolls 6 in one way or another.
