Competitive Super Smash Bros. player Epic_Gabriel has been banned from playing in an upcoming Ultimate tournament. Following reports of Gabriel using slurs brought to the tournament organizer’s attention, he will no longer be allowed to compete in the Cyphacon Mini event, and faces an indefinite ban from events hosted by other pro Smash figures.

Gabriel has drawn criticism in the past, especially for his attitude towards his opponents following a loss. As one of the best up-and-coming R.O.B. mains in Smash Ultimate, the competitive player planned to attend an upcoming tournament until his chatlogs that spurred the ban surfaced.

As reported by GameRant, the new developments come in the form of several Discord messages shared by Nebraska tournament organizer @BubbyNE, which show Gabriel’s repeated usage of racial, homophobic, and transphobic slurs. This prompted Scion Esports to ban Gabriel from participating in the Cyphacon Mini event. Team Liquid tournament director L4st also noted that Gabriel would be banned indefinitely from events run by himself and two other community coordinators.

Gabriel’s messages go back into early 2021, but there are uses of slurs within just the last few days. Following his ban, Gabriel issued a Twitlonger apology statement. He directly addressed many of the people involved, including some high-profile LGBTQ+ members of the Smash community like MuteAce and Mysterica.

Other players allege this is not the first time Gabriel has used hateful language towards his peers and community. Back in October of last year, Kiyarash posted a series of screenshots between them and Gabriel, which contain mentions of suicide and more instances of slurs. Gabriel also posted another apologetic blog post following the encounter, and the community took complaints of his behavior to Gabriel’s sponsors.

Gabriel’s most recent showings at major events include a 13th and 49th place at Riptide and Low Tide City, respectively. It’s not exactly clear how long the effects of this ban will last for a player whose conduct had previously left him in trouble with his sponsors.
