After 17 long years, Simon Cowell’s The X-Factor has been canceled. The U.K.-based show began in 2004, running for 15 seasons before taking a break in 2020 during the pandemic. The hit music competition set off the careers of many musicians from the Kingdom, many of which are still prominent in the music world today. Winners include Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”, “Better In Time”) and the U.K.’s beloved Little Mix.

In its 445-episode run, the show has never been shy of controversy, especially musical controversy. In fact, a number of its most famous alumnae were never even chosen as winners on the show. Cher Lloyd, known for her 2011 hit “Want U Back” finished in fourth place on the 7th season of the show back in 2010. But most controversially, the global phenomenon and most famous boyband of the 2010s, One Direction, did not win either, finishing just ahead of Lloyd in third place on season 7 of The X-Factor. With so many popular musical acts fighting their way to the top, and many not making it, it’s no wonder the show lasted 15 seasons on the air.

According to Reality TV World, this week a spokesperson for ITV made a statement saying, “There are no current plans for the next series of The X-Factor at this stage.” Cowell will be starting on a new musical quiz show called Walk The Line, which will also be on ITV. No news on other X-Factor franchises has been released.

In addition to jumpstarting the careers of many contemporary musical artists, the music competition also had a star-studded array of musicians as judges, looking to inspire a new generation of amazing voices. Also judging were reality competition veterans Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne. Judges with a history in the music industry included Cheryl, Mell B, and Kelly Rowland, and Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger on the American X-Factor. These judges were known for making controversial, and often exciting decisions. Most famous was Cowell’s decision to bring Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson together.

Nevertheless, since the start of the Covid-19 global pandemic, many reality competition shows have been suffering as well. Some relegated themselves to digital live audiences, while others have been forced to stop production altogether. Even The Bachelorette was forced to film at a resort to safely contain the show’s cast and crew. Whether or not the pandemic is at fault for the end of The X-Factor, its loss will be felt by fans all around the world.
