With the imminent release of Marvel’s epic, Eternals, there’s no better time to get on Reddit and see what people are saying. Once the world has the chance to see the film, the subs will blow up even more, but there are still quite a few surprising opinions on the newest MCU installment.

Some takes center on the MCU’s most diverse cast (including Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, and Salma Hayek) or director Chloé Zhao. Additionally, there are even comments on the look of the Deviants, the Eternals’ violent, cruel counterparts.

It’s The Most Anticipated Movie Of Phase 4

Imaginary-Resort-749 shared their excitement for Eternals, saying “This is probably my most anticipated movie of this Phase, don’t really care how everyone else feels.” The remainder of their message preached the importance of seeing the movie before casting judgment.

Frosty-Dark 2767 had a fairly snide way of disagreeing with the Redditor’s take, saying “lol it’s really not most anticipated of this phase.” Apparently, the replier found a way to disagree with excitement. To be fair, just because the first poster’s comment is divisive doesn’t negate it from being a subjective opinion, so the replier’s comment deserves to be seen as unpopular.

It Will Get The “Black Panther Treatment”

While discussing Eternals, JelliclKitten brought up a particularly beloved MCU film. “People are getting ready to give it the Black Panther treatment when it comes out and it’s more critically acclaimed than the one they are more excited about, Spider-Man.”

The Redditor then tied the four together by saying Black Panther was merely fun (a massively unpopular opinion) while Avengers: Infinity War is the best of all the movies. Black Panther is viewed by the general public as one of the best, and certainly one of the most important, superhero films of all time. Or, as Yen_eyes replied, “This subs treatment of BP is pathetic, a real eye-opener.” Like in the movie, T’Challa has more friends in the MCU than enemies.

No One Cares About Eternals

One Redditor doesn’t seem to hold any desire to meet this film’s characters. In the words of Frosty-Dark2767 said “why should we even care about them? Who asked it? It’s kinda like Black Widow she’s in those movies for one reason…and her own movie wasn’t asked either.

While Black Widow had its moments, it was seen by some as underwhelming. However, the movie was certainly requested (for years, even). As for the character’s “one reason” to be in the movie, that’s unspecified but assumedly unpopular. No matter what the “one reason” is, both the Eternals and Black Widow have received movies for more motivations than one.

It Doesn’t Look Like Old Comic Book Movies

On a thread for Eternals anticipation, Unseen1983 had a bizarre complaint about the look of the film. “I’ve been a Marvel fan since the early 90s…most of their movies suck and are boring as hell…I loved the Maguire Spider-man films…the early X-Men films…It wasn’t what I grew up with and boring….”

Like Guardians of the Galaxy, Eternals appears to be taking the MCU in a lofty, world-building new direction. The Redditor’s complaint about newer superhero films being boring is a little baffling. Making the old Spider-Man and X-Men films ad nauseam is what would be boring.

It’s As Bad As Green Lantern & Fant4stic

Drkamon didn’t mince words on their thoughts about Eternals: “2 and half hours of bland underdeveloped but crowded characters trying to say as much exposition as it’s possible with as little desire to do any acting.” The reaction to the film has been mixed, and the 2.5-hour runtime has been seen as an issue, but slighting the actors for reading the script’s lines is a low blow.

Then, the Redditor compares the Zhao film to two particularly disliked superhero installments. “No, really, if this move was made by anybody bud Marvel studios it would be compared to Fantastic Four and Green Lantern. Just flat out boring.” This is extreme even in comparison to those who didn’t like Eternals, Green Lantern is a movie with well-documented problems. Fant4stic is worse still, with a director who has talked about his own “Snyder Cut”.

It Looks As Lame As Inhumans

If there’s one project the MCU would love to have expunged from its record, it’s Inhumans. It was meant as an event, even getting an IMAX screening, but was almost universally reviled as broken and far from entertaining.

Even if Eternals doesn’t reach the MCU’s highest heights, it certainly doesn’t reach the lowest low. Breakenstrings disagrees, saying, “Looks as lame as Inhumans.” The user doesn’t elaborate any further but is probably making this judgment based solely on the costume design.

Marvel Is Stretching The Power Scales

One Redditor believes that soon the MCU will have too many overpowered characters. As asjonesy99 said, “They seem to be stretching the power scales a bit thin…The Eternals seem to be very powerful…and we’re supposed to be excited about Falcon with no actual superpowers as Captain America for example.”

The MCU has established by this point that characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Falcon (pre-shield) can exist in the same universe, sometimes even within the same narrative.

The Cast Is “Holier-Than-Thou”

Affectionate_Fix_856 was very clear about their complaints with the film. “This Eternals movie is DEFINITELY a money grab. Everyone cast in it is either a holier than though A-lister who wanted in on some of that never-ending marvel money….”

This hardly seems a reason to bash the film considering it’s the argument that could be used for almost any other major movie. Furthermore, it’s hard to consider a cast that contains Kumail Nanjiani and Gemma Chan “holier than thou.” The Redditor then expounds on their thoughts regarding the cast: “…or they are B-Listers…that got cast (for waaaaaaaay less money) to be the supporting cast.” The issue is that not every actor can be an A-Lister, so this complaint is bizarre; why wouldn’t someone with less exposure and drawing power also receive less money?

The MCU Is Finished

One Redditor believes that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on a collision course towards irrelevance. As Jypahttii said, “And this is why MCU is headed for trouble. The best, most central characters are finished, to be replaced by new versions that aren’t as good.”

The opinion is controversial because a great actor can do a lot with a role. Or the character can be particularly well-written. The viewing public never really knows what will resonate. Prior to 2008, Iron Man was on far fewer t-shirts and franchised birthday gear. Now, in an overdue embrace of diversity, the franchise is at a place where Shang-Chi could lead the Avengers.

Marvel Fans Don’t Even Know Who Kumail Nanjiani Is

When it’s brought up how Pakistani comedian/actor Kumail Nanjiani is portraying a Bollywood star, one Redditor came back with a very controversial assumption.

In the words of rohan2099: “90% of Marvel fans don’t even know who Kumail is and MCU will be the only place they will ever see him.” This is fairly doubtful; Nanjiani is a popular actor who has even headlined films by this point. Mostly, though, there’s Silicon Valley, a popular HBO comedy series of which Nanjiani was a major part.
