Marvel’s special one-shot Eternals Forever #1, will pit the stars of the MCU’s upcoming film Eternals against one another. Publishing only three weeks before the film’s release on November 5th, the issue will introduce new readers, and remind veteran ones, of the millennia-long struggle between the Eternals and their enemies the Deviants.

The Eternals are the brainchild of legendary comic book creator Jack Kirby and first debuted in 1976. Drawing inspiration from mythology, the series introduced readers to heroes based on mythological figures like Ikaris and Sersi. In the comics, the Eternals are a race of super-humans created at the dawn of time by the cosmic beings the Celestials, alongside the grotesque Deviants. The Deviants desired to rule over the human race while the Eternals sought to guide and protect them in their development. The two races have spent millennia warring over control of the planet, with their struggle and the personalities of the Eternals being absorbed into human mythology. The Eternals and Deviants are currently set to make their MCU debut this November in Eternals from Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao, and Marvel Comics is marking the film’s release with a new one-shot story.

The one-shot is entitled Eternals Forever, written by former Marvel Comics executive editor Ralph Macchio with art by Ramón Bachs. Marvel hopes the one-shot will “reintroduce fans and newcomers” to the Eternals; serving as an entry point for more casual comic book fans before the team’s debut in the MCU. Marvel has released a preview of the one-shot alongside an official description. The one-shot will be set in the distant past and will showcase a snapshot of the history-spanning conflict between the Deviants and the Eternals. In the issue, the Deviants capture and brainwash the Eternal Ikaris, releasing him on a mission to assassinate the Eternals leader Ajax. The story will follow fellow Eternals Sprite and Gilgamesh as they try to foil the Deviant’s plot and save their comrade. Check out preview images below:

At first glance it may seem a strange choice by Marvel to have the plot of their one-shot, clearly pitched as an introduction to these characters for audiences of the upcoming MCU film, revolve around the starring characters of the film fighting one another. However, in the long history of Marvel’s superhero team-ups, it is almost a tradition for heroes to be introduced by first suffering a misunderstanding and fighting against one another before joining forces to defeat a real “big bad”. With this in mind, this standalone story seems to be deliberately following this tradition in the service of something like a soft reboot.

It also makes sense for Marvel to release a tale focused solely on the conflict between the Eternals and the Deviants. While the trailers for the upcoming Eternals have made it clear that this will be the crux of the film’s narrative, the recent Eternals series by Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic has so far focused more on internecine conflicts between the group’s members and their struggle with the mad titan Thanos. By setting the issue far back in the mythology of the Eternal and Deviant struggle, the story will not interfere with the current run and be able to feature characters like Gilgamesh and Sprite as cherished team members before they fell out of favor with their comrades.

Readers eager to jump in with Eternals Forever #1 should check out Marvel’s preview depicting this previously unknown chapter of the struggle between the Eternals and the Deviants. To find out what happens when the MCU’s next heroes are pitted against each other, make sure to pick up Eternals Forever #1 on October 13.
