The mid-credits scene in Marvel’s Eternals movie delivered a key building block needed for Adam Warlock’s story to be adapted to the MCU. What happened in Eternals may not ultimately cross over into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but there’s a good chance that it’ll have a major impact on Adam Warlock’s overarching story in the MCU. After all, there’s a common expectation that the Golden Gladiator will have a long MCU arc that goes beyond Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Warlock is a central figure in the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe in comic books. The hero was integral to major events such as Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and more. In the same vein as Nova and Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock is a hero that many think will be a main character in whatever cosmic crossovers Marvel has planned for the MCU’s future. Warlock may have missed out on the showdown with his comic archrival in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, but he could be one of the characters that Marvel calls on to stand against Galactus, Annihilus, or Kang the Conqueror in MCU Phase 5. Not unlike how the comic character was portrayed, the MCU’s Warlock could even lead the way for the heroes.

It’s already been confirmed that Marvel will pay off Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.’s Adam Warlock setup by introducing the character in the 2023 sequel. Played by Will Poulter, the character will encounter Star-Lord’s team in the MCU Phase 4 movie. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. is known to be the end of the line for the core cast, it’s unlikely that Marvel will close the door on Adam Warlock after just one film. As for what will next come for him, that could be where Eternals’ mid-credits scene comes into play. Here’s how Eternals set up Warlock’s MCU story.

Adam Warlock’s Marvel Comics Story Explained

Adam Warlock was born into the Marvel Universe in Fantastic Four #66 as a genetically engineered creation of human scientists. As an incredibly powerful being who began his story as an adult, Adam was understandably confused about how to behave around people and what his proper place in the world was. After meeting the scientist known as the High Evolutionary, Adam was given a new purpose. The High Evolutionary gifted him the Soul Stone and sent him on a mission to a place called Counter-Earth. In his efforts to save Counter-Earth from classic Thor villain Man-Beast, Warlock came far in his journey to establishing himself as a force for good in Marvel Comics.

Adam Warlock’s conflict with Man-Beast was followed by a trip to an alien planet and a battle with the Universal Church of Truth. It was during this story that he met Gamora and Pip the Troll, a cigar-smoking ne’er-do-well with several vices. The three formed a trio, allied with Thanos, and engaged in a heated struggle with the Universal Church of Truth, which was led by Adam Warlock’s evil future counterpart, Magus. Once Magus was defeated by Warlock, Thanos killed them and trapped their spirits inside the Soul Stone. Marvel seemingly ended the three heroes’ stories by having them decide to live together peacefully in Soulworld after Thanos’ defeat. Over a decade later, Marvel brought them all back and gave them new adventures, many of which involved Thanos and the Infinity Stones. For years, both Pip the Troll and Gamora remained steadfast allies of Adam Warlock, who he valued so much that he entrusted them with the Space Stone and Time Stone respectively. As a team, the trio of Adam Warlock, Gamora, and Pip protected the universe from several major threats.

Why Eternals’ Mid-Credits Scene Is Important For Adam Warlock

With the confirmation that Adam Warlock will finally join the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there was an assumption among those familiar with the character that it was only a matter of time before Pip made his MCU debut as well. And introducing Pip the Troll is exactly what Marvel did with Eternals’ mid-credits scene. Voiced by Patton Oswalt, the MCU’s comic-accurate Pip the Troll made a grand entrance alongside Harry Styles’ Starfox on the Eternals’ starship. It would seem that the two are traveling companions in the MCU. Based on how the scene ended, it looks like the two characters may become allies to the MCU’s Eternals in the future.

Thanks to Pip the Troll’s introduction in Eternals, Marvel now has the biggest element it will need to tell Adam Warlock’s story. After all, Pip is his loyal sidekick in Marvel Comics and a character with whom he shares an important dynamic. Whereas Warlock is a righteous hero, Pip is a bit of a scoundrel who’s always getting himself into trouble. And because Warlock is so aloof and serious, Pip the Troll helps offset that in the comics by adding some comedic relief. If the MCU’s Warlock has the same personality as his comic counterpart, Patton Oswalt’s Pip could fill the same role.

How (& When) Adam Warlock Can Meet Pip the Troll In The MCU

As things stand, the MCU’s Pip the Troll is currently playing sidekick to Harry Styles’ Starfox – not Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock. However, that doesn’t matter, because Marvel could always separate them offscreen by saying in his next movie that Pip wasn’t interested in helping the Eternals. Or, Adam Warlock could meet Starfox and Pip together. That is possible, especially since Starfox may not be limited to an Eternals sequel. Their meeting could end with Pip deciding to stick with Warlock over Eros.

Pip’s current status after Eternals isn’t a problem for Adam Warlock’s future or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Warlock’s story won’t feel complete without Pip, but there’s no reason why he needs to meet him right away. Similar to how the comics handled him, Adam Warlock’s story could be told in stages. In the MCU, his first step could be to meet the Guardians and become either an enemy or a team member. Adventuring with Pip the Troll in outer space could be what he does after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel could set that up by giving Pip the Troll a second appearance in the movie’s post-credits scene. If so, Adam Warlock and Pip could become a duo just in time for their return, whether it be in an Adam Warlock MCU project or an MCU Phase 5 crossover movie.
