Warning! Spoilers ahead for Shang-Chi #5

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Shang-Chi, it’s revealed that even Iron Man underestimates the power and skills of Marvel’s resident martial arts master. While Shang-Chi’s new series has seen him working to redeem his recently inherited empire that had belonged to his evil father, many of Marvel’s heroes have grown concerned that the new power has corrupted Shang-Chi instead. When Iron Man decides to go after Shang-Chi directly after the Five Weapons Society comes into possession of some of his stolen tech, Tony Stark receives more of a fight than he bargained for.

In previous issues of Shang-Chi from writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Dike Ruan, Shang-Chi’s work to reinvent the Five Weapons Society from the corrupt criminal empire it’s long been has gone slower than he would like. Between his attempts to clean house and end the Society’s more sinister operations all over the globe while also working through his relationships with his previously estranged siblings, heroes such as Spider-Man, Captain America, and Mr. Fantastic have grown concerned that Shang-Chi has gone rogue. Now, Iron Man is facing the martial arts master in Shang-Chi #5, believing that Shang-Chi has purchased his stolen tech from arms dealers when in reality Shang-Chi captured them, intending to return the tech without incriminating the Society.

While Shang-Chi and Iron Man immediately start fighting, Tony is pretty confident that he would be winning their brawl due to his advanced tech: “Cutting-edge armor vs. human fists! Face it Shang, you can’t beat me!” However, Iron Man definitely spoke too soon. As soon as Shang-Chi makes it to his armory, it’s whole new ball game for the new leader of the Five Weapons Society, who gets his hands of some impressive weapons of his own and forces Iron Man to admit that he had underestimated how good of a fighter Shang-Chi truly is.

Eventually, Shang-Chi manages to gain the upper hand, and he even takes one of Iron Man’s gauntlets which forces a stalemate. As a result, Shang-Chi was able to explain that Iron Man’s stolen armor was brought to them without the Society’s prior consent, promising Iron Man that the organization no longer steals under his leadership. Either way, the fact that Shang-Chi was able to go toe-to-toe with Iron Man despite his advanced armor and tech is rather impressive.

The end of the issue reveals that the stolen armor and arms dealers were all a ruse by Iron Man himself to test Shang-Chi. Furthermore, it was also a chance for the Armored Avenger to secretly monitor the Society’s operations, which he then reported to his fellow heroes who shared his concerns. So while Shang-Chi can perhaps handle Iron Man one-on-one, it’s naturally going to be a lot tougher if he has to fight an assembled team of some of the Marvel Universe’s greatest heroes. Hopefully the martial arts master will be able to prove his true intentions as Shang-Chi continues.
