Thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, many 2021 movies have been delayed to 2022. As the pandemic continues to engulf the world, the entertainment industry – particularly movie and TV studios – have reshuffled their release schedules to accommodate production shutdowns and theaters being closed globally. While some countries and states in the United States have relaxed their restrictions to allow for theaters to open up, things remain in a constant state of flux.

In response to the pandemic, several movies were pulled from the calendar altogether and still lack a release date, while some were sent direct to VOD or streaming, as was the case with Trolls World Tour and Disney’s Artemis Fowl. To prevent schedule clashes and the risk of overwhelming the market after all the delays from 2020 to 2021, some studios have moved lots of previously scheduled 2021 film releases back to 2022 in order to accommodate the major reshuffle.

Following all the pushes from 2020 to 2021, then from 2021 to 2022, both 2021 and 2022 have become some of the most packed years in blockbuster movie history. Of course, if the pandemic continues being prolonged, it’s possible some 2022 releases will bump to 2023. Here are all the films, as of the writing of this piece, that have seen their release dates moved from 2021 to 2022.

The 355

X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg reunites with star Jessica Chastain in The 355, who plays a CIA agent that teams up with other elite female spies from around the world to recover a doomsday weapon. The cast is packed with talent in addition to Chastain, including Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Sebastian Stan, and Edgar Ramirez. The 355 was planned to release on January 15, 2021, but got bumped back to January 14, 2022.

Avatar 2

It’s been 12 years since director James Cameron’s Avatar took the world by storm, breaking box office records. It’ll be 13 by the time Avatar 2 finally arrives on December 16, 2022, after multiple production delays pre-COVID, and several more after the pandemic began.

Babylon

The latest from La La Land writer/director Damien Chazelle, Babylon was originally planned for a Christmas Day 2021 release, but was subsequently delayed to Christmas Day 2022. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie lead the cast, which also includes names like Samara Weaving, Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, and Jovan Adepo.

The Batman

DC’s latest attempt at reinventing the Caped Crusader for the big screen, The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves, and exists outside the main DCEU continuity. Set in the early years of Bruce Wayne’s time as Batman, Robert Pattinson takes over the lead role and battles with The Riddler, while Jeffrey Wright becomes the first Black actor to play Jim Gordon. The Batman was originally planned for a June 25, 2021 release, but several delays sent it to March 4, 2022.

Black Adam

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson finally makes his official debut in the superhero movie realm with DC’s Black Adam, playing the titular antihero and frequent rival of Shazam!. Black Adam was originally set to soar into theaters on December 22, 2021, but Coronavirus sent it packing to July 29, 2022.

Death on the Nile

A sequel to 2017’s successful Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile sees Kenneth Branagh back as both director and star, playing world-famous detective Hercule Poirot. Awash with stars like Annette Bening, Gal Gadot, and – awkwardly at this point – Armie Hammer, Death on the Nile had previously been moved to September 7, 2021 after multiple delays, before moving again to February 11, 2022.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been praised for its intricate, multi-film narrative, which is why Disney plans its release slate years ahead of time, something that’s absolutely necessary with a franchise as sprawling and dedicated to its canon as the MCU. That means that, when the calendar needs to be drastically rearranged due to an unprecedented worldwide pandemic, they have to move everything in a specific order. One MCU film can’t just jump ahead of another, a luxury that DC’s franchise currently possesses as it moves away from the expanded universe model. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which will be directed by Sam Raimi, had initially been secured for May 7, 2021, with the movie tying into the Disney+ series WandaVision and Loki. The film is now scheduled for March 25, 2022.

Downton Abbey: A New Era

After the massive success of the first Downton Abbey movie, it’s no wonder that Focus Features is back with another adaptation of the acclaimed PBS series. Downton Abbey: A New Era was supposed to come out on December 22, 2021, but was delayed to March 18, 2022.

Elvis

Elvis is a biopic about the late king of rock and roll by director Baz Luhrmann, and features a cavalcade of acting talent. Tom Hanks plays Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, while Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Austin Butler plays Elvis. After an initial plan to release the biopic in 2021, it’s now set to swivel its hips into theaters on June 3, 2022.

Fantastic Beasts 3

The third entry in the Fantastic Beasts franchise of Harry Potter spinoff stories, Fantastic Beasts 3 was originally scheduled for November 2021, but has since shifted to July 15, 2022. This was partially due to the Coronavirus, but also partially due to Johnny Depp’s exit as Grindelwald, and subsequent replacement by Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen.

Halloween Ends

After the smash success of Halloween 2018, Blumhouse announced plans for two sequels, with Halloween Kills coming in October 2020 and Halloween Ends in October 2021. Thanks to Coronavirus, Michael Myers’ next two adventures were each pushed back a year, with Halloween Kills coming October 15, 2021, and Halloween Ends set for October 14, 2022.

Indiana Jones 5

It’s been over a decade since The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released – the Indiana Jones movie widely considered to be the franchise’s worst addition – but that hasn’t stopped Disney from wanting to revive the iconic Spielberg-led series now that they have control of Lucasfilm. Harrison Ford will return to the role he made famous while David Koepp is on screenwriting duties following Crystal Skull, but for the first time, Spielberg will not be in the director’s chair. That duty falls to James Mangold. Filming was expected to begin in April 2020, but the pandemic-led shutdown put a stop to that. Indiana Jones 5 will now be released a year later than planned, having moved from July 9, 2021, to July 29, 2022.

Jackass Forever

Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and the rest of the Jackass gang – minus Bam Margera – are back for Jackass Forever, proving that even pushing 50, they haven’t changed much. Originally scheduled for March 5, 2021, Jackass Forever has been pushed back four times, finally settling on February 4, 2022.

John Wick: Chapter 4

Following Winston’s betrayal at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Keanu Reeves’ master assassin is back to even the score, and presumably will kill lots and lots of people getting there. John Wick 4 was originally dated for May 21, 2021, in a direct face-off with Reeves’ other big sequel The Matrix: Resurrections. Wick will now return on May 27, 2022.

Jurassic World: Dominion

Jurassic World: Dominion, the third and presumably final installment in the Jurassic World trilogy, sees Chris Pratt’s Owen and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire share the screen with original Jurassic Park heroes Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), and Ellie Satler (Laura Dern) for the first time. Dominion was planned to release in summer 2021, but was pushed to June 10, 2022.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Minions: The Rise of Gru is a sequel to 2015’s Minions, itself a prequel spinoff to the Despicable Me franchise. Illumination’s latest likely animated blockbuster had been previously dated for July 2, 2021, but was subsequently bumped back to July 1, 2022.

Mission: Impossible 7

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 7, which like Top Gun: Maverick, has been hit with a heavy round of delays. Its initial release date was July 23, 2021, but the sequel now resides at September 30, 2022. If both Maverick and Mission release as scheduled, 2022 will be a huge year for Cruise.

Morbius

Jared Leto stars as the titular living vampire in Morbius, the next entry in Sony’s Marvel universe featuring characters surrounding Spider-Man. In a possible direct tie to the MCU, Michael Keaton reprises his role as Vulture. Morbius was originally set for July 2020, but has been delayed a whopping four times since, finally landing on January 28, 2022.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Another casualty of this mass move is Thor: Love and Thunder. The fourth film in the Thor series sees the return of Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, along with stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Natalie Portman will reprise her role as Jane Foster and take over the Thor mantle at the same time. The Guardians of the Galaxy will allegedly be making an appearance and Christian Bale will be the main villain. The movie’s initial release date was November 5, 2021, but Coronavirus forced Thor: Love and Thunder to move to May 6, 2022.

Top Gun: Maverick

After decades away, Tom Cruise returns to his iconic role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel has been bumped around constantly since the Coronavirus pandemic began, most recently flying over to May 27, 2022 from a previous date of November 19, 2021.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

For years, Nicolas Cage has earned a reputation as one of the most unpredictable actors working today, often taking the strangest roles, and going over the top with them. Sometimes that leads to gold, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent sees Cage play a fictional version of himself, one that has to dig up some of his best past characters to escape from a Mexican drug lord. A March 19, 2021 release date was set, before a delay sent Cage’s latest to April 22, 2022.

Uncharted

A prequel to the popular video game franchise, Uncharted stars Tom Holland as young adventurer Nathan Drake, and Mark Wahlberg as his grizzled mentor Victor Sullivan. Uncharted has had multiple issues getting out of the gate, but now sits on a release date of February 11, 2022, moving from its initial 2021 movie release date.
