Warning: contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 314

In many series, bringing back an old villain is done to provide a shot at revenge, but My Hero Academia has just brought out one of its deadliest enemies, seemingly for no other reason than to show how pathetic he’s truly become.

One of the series’ most popular arcs to date has been the Shie Hassaikai arc, where the League of Villains struck a temporary alliance with a branch of the Yakuza led by Kai Chisaki, also known as Overhaul. As villains go, Overhaul was a particularly brutal man, and much of his plan revolved around using the quirk of a young girl, Eri, no matter how much it hurt her. Overhaul’s battle against Deku and the other heroes was bloody, with one major character dying, and another losing his powers, seemingly for good. However, after being defeated, the villains cut off Chisaki’s arms, ensuring he could never use his powers again either. Having his organization destroyed, Eri taken away, and his quirk rendered useless, Chisaki was thrown in jail, and fans might be forgiven for thinking they’d never see him again.

That all changed when All for One broke out of prison, and Chisaki was seen briefly among those who were freed alongside him. Since, he’s been seen dragged along by Lady Nagant, an assassin out for Deku’s head, but has said and done almost nothing. There was no indication as to why she was bringing him, or what relationship they had; while some fans speculated that they might be lovers, it seems that the truth was simply that she pitied him, seeing Chisaki as yet another victim of the hero-based society. In chapter 314, Lady Nagant shows that this pity only goes so far, as she turns her gun on him and begins using him as a hostage, forcing Deku into a difficult dilemma.

While in the present fight, Chisaki is little more than a defenseless bystander, he’s still the man who killed and injured many of Midoriya’s friends. He has shown no remorse for his actions and had only spent a few months in jail before All for One’s breakout. Fans often consider his abusive behavior towards young Eri to be particularly heinous, and many would see his death as being deserved. For a hero like Deku, however, the situation should be clear-cut: an uninvolved party is in danger and must be rescued. Lady Nagant is not targeting him for vengeance or justice, but simply as a pawn to get to her real target, Deku. Letting Chisaki die here, to her, would not actually bring any justice no matter how appropriate it may seem as punishment.

With Deku operating outside the norms of hero society already and having taken on a darker new look to accompany the change, this situation would seem to mark a major turning point in his character, depending on how he handles it. Allowing Chisaki to be killed for a strategic advantage in the fight might be the smart move, but that’s not how a hero behaves, and it’s certainly not the kind of action that would make All Might proud. On the other hand, doing the predictable and rescuing Chisaki from danger plays into Lady Nagant’s hand and puts Deku himself into an exceptionally dangerous position, and if All for One gets his hands on the boy, he’s essentially won. The dilemma made for a compelling end-of-chapter cliffhanger in the latest chapter of My Hero Academia, to be sure, and how the story unfolds from here will all depend on Deku’s decision.
