Comic-Con 2017 has come and gone, including lots of news and reveals about the current and future state of the DCEU. Here’s what you need to know.

Another year of San Diego Comic-Con is in the books, and as usual, there’s plenty to talk about, especially when it comes to the DC Extended Universe. Not only did we get trailers and footage for the in-production movies, but a whole new slate of movies was announced, there were some leaks and rumors about behind the scenes details on several films, some details about future plans were revealed in interviews, and more.

Aquaman

Despite Aquaman being next on DC’s slate after Justice League, there was surprisingly little actually revealed about the film. The high point for DC’s aquatic king was some Hall H exclusive footage shown. While anyone not in attendance at the panel (or anyone that was there but wants to see it again) will have to settle for a simple description of the Aquaman teaser footage for the time being, it’s encouraging to note the reception was universally positive, even drawing comparisons to the opening of Star Wars, only under water.

In the footage presented, there’s an army of manta-shaped submarines, soldiers riding sharks, and more. While it was a great tease of the aesthetic and the tone, it was anything but a proper trailer, merely giving Hall H attendees a taste of what they can expect in December 2018 without revealing any explicit story details. In the same vein, there was concept art shown revealing more of the same, also confirming the appearance of Black Manta, who’s said to maintain a look that’s very in line with his traditional comic book suit and helmet.

Otherwise, the biggest Aquaman reveal coming out of Comic-Con is that Ocean Master (who we already know will be played by Patrick Wilson) is going to be the movie’s villain. This might not be the biggest revelation to anyone that assumed that to be the case when Wilson’s casting was originally announced, but Orm hasn’t always been a villain in his comic book incarnations, and there was always a possibility his presence in Aquaman would be used to set him up for a villain role in a potential sequel – after all, Aquaman already has a big villain in Black Manta.

Batgirl

While Batgirl doesn’t have an official release date yet, we do know it’s coming since news broke that Joss Whedon would be writing and directing the project for the DCEU in a story featuring the Barbara Gordon version of the character and likely heavily influenced by Gail Simone’s New 52 run.

There weren’t any more official details presented during the Warner Bros. Hall H panel at Comic-Con, but a Batgirl logo was on display for the announcement of the DCEU’s future slate of movies, showing the studio is serious about moving forward and it’s not just another of the many hypothetical developments they’re working on behind the scenes.

During and interview at Comic-Con, Geoff Johns did confirm that Joss Whedon will be starting work on Batgirl “next year,” but whether that means cameras will be rolling for a 2019 release or simply he’ll start drafting the story still remains to be seen. She’s not expected to make an appearance in Justice League, but with Commissioner Gordon’s “It’s good to see you playing well with others again” line to Batman from the first Justice League trailer, it looks like the groundwork for her arrival is already being established.
