After a troubled production, made significantly more difficult by the ongoing pandemic, Mission: Impossible 7 looks like it’s finally back on track. The Tom Cruise-led vehicle, which follows in the footsteps of 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, is set to be released in 2022 following significant delays and development issues. However, thanks to the continued critical and commercial success of the Mission: Impossible franchise, anticipation around the sequel remains incredibly high.

Like previous installments of the franchise, the film is set to star the ever-present Cruise as IMF superspy Ethan Hunt. Historically, Mission: Impossible movies have been notable for their spectacular stuntwork – often with Cruise himself risking life and limb in order to make the scenes look as authentic as possible. The new film will also be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has won acclaim for his work on two previous Mission: Impossible films. The production has been a globe-trotting adventure in and of itself, incorporating locations as diverse as Rome, Norway and the UK.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Mission: Impossible – Fallout, fans have had to wait a long time for the sequel. The COVID-19 pandemic struck right in the middle of filming, significantly delaying production and causing enormous stress for the filmmakers. In fact, the new film was held up in many circles as an acid test for how to make new movies in a post-pandemic world. Given this pressure and the popularity of the Mission: Impossible series, it’s understandable that interest remains incredibly high. Here’s what to expect from Mission: Impossible 7.
