Ever since Pokemon’s first outing in 1996 with Japan’s Pokemon Red and Green, Legendary Pokemon have been coveted and sought after by fans for their incredible rarity and power. Over the years, fans have been introduced to new Legendary Pokemon with each generation, but the 4th generation of Pokemon games is somewhat notorious for including a great number of Legendaries in its Pokedex, along with a great number of Mythical monsters as well.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that fans would be returning to the Sinnoh region with Nintendo Switch remakes of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Compared to other mainline Pokemon remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl seem to be staying very faithful to their source material, so it’s likely that fans can expect to see most of the monsters in Diamond and Pearl appear in the remakes, including Legendary Pokemon.

Dialga and Palkia in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Of course, it seems fairly certain that fans can expect to see Dialga and Palkia in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Back in 2006, the Steel and Dragon-type Temporal Pokemon Dialga was the flagship Legendary for Pokemon Diamond, while the Water and Dragon-type Spatial Pokemon Palkia was the flagship Legendary for Pokemon Pearl. Each monster is at the center of its respective game’s story, and could be caught at Mt. Coronet’s Spear Pillar towards the end of the games.

Fans certainly weren’t surprised to see the Legendaries return with the announcement of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. However, despite plans for more faithful remakes, many are speculating whether Dialga and Palkia will receive any sort of new forms, as is custom with many Legendary Pokemon. In the 3rd generation remakes Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the box Legendaries Kyogre and Groudon were given brand-new Primal forms, so fans are eager to learn if Dialga and Palkia will see anything similar.

Giratina in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Like many other generations of Pokemon, Diamond and Pearl’s flagship Legendaries belong to a trio, which is made complete by Giratina; cementing Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina as what is known as the “creation trio” among fans. Although Giratina went on to play a much larger role in the story of Pokemon Platinum, it still held significance in Diamond and Pearl. Since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl look to be remakes of those games and not Pokemon Platinum, the remakes may feature Giratina as it originally appeared at Turnback Cave.

In Pokemon’s lore, Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are said to have all been created simultaneously by the Mythical Pokemon Arceus. While Dialga and Palkia ruled over time and space respectively, Giratina, the ruler of antimatter, is said to have been banished to the Distortion World due to its destructive nature. Although Giratina is very likely to appear in one way or another, fans speculate that it and the Distortion World could appear in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl with a special episode, similar to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’s Delta Episode.

Azelf, Uxie, and Mesprit in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, the 3 powerful Lake Guardians Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit played a major role in the games’ stories. Like Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, the lake trio is said to have been created by Arceus in order to quell Dialga and Palkia if they were ever enraged. Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit are also said to have taught humans emotions, knowledge, and willpower respectively. Just as in the original games, it’s likely that Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players will be able to find Uxie at at Lake Acuity, Azelf at Lake Valor, and Mesprit at Lake Verity.

Heatran in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The original Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games had an extensive postgame for fans to experience, including new areas, new Pokemon, new items, and more. After defeating the Pokemon League in Diamond and Pearl, players would gain access to the new area Stark Mountain, where players will journey up the mountain to find the Fire and Steel-type Lava Dome Pokemon Heatran. Between Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the process of finding and capturing Heatran is largely the same, so it’s likely that it will remain mostly unchanged in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Cresselia in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Like Heatran, players gained access to the Legendary Pokemon Cresselia in the original Diamond and Pearl games’ postgame. In order to save a sailor’s son from nightmares caused by the mythical Pokemon Darkrai, the player would venture from Canalave City to Fullmoon Island. Here, players could encounter the Psychic-type Lunar Pokemon Cresselia, but wouldn’t have the chance to battle it.

After obtaining the Lunar Wing and giving it to the sailor to cure his son, players could encounter Cresselia randomly out in the wild as it is a roaming Pokemon, where it changes its location whenever the player does as well. Cresselia’s encounter also doesn’t change much between Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, so it likely will appear in the same way in the remakes.

Regigigas in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, players would need the Legendary Pokemon Regice, Regirock, and Registeel to awaken the Colossal Pokemon Regigigas. However, the only way that players could get these Pokemon in their party was either by cheating them into the game, or transferring them from Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald via the Pal Park.

With the Legendary titans in their party, players could enter the Snowpoint Temple in Snowpoint City, then venturing to the depths of the temple for the chance to fight and capture Regigigas. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl may devise a way to allow players to transfer the Legendary titans from their Pokemon Sword and Shield games, as they appeared in the Crown Tundra DLC expansion.

While Regice, Regirock, and Registeel needed to be transferred from previous Pokemon games in the original Diamond and Pearl titles, there was a special Regigigas that was distributed in Pokemon Platinum that allowed players to awaken the Legendary titans. This special Regigigas would give players access to Regice, Regirock, and Registeel in the Iceberg Ruins, the Rock Peak Ruins, the Iron Ruins respectively. Perhaps Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will implement a similar distribution event or allow players to capture the Legendary titans to then awaken Regigigas.

Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In Pokemon Platinum’s postgame, players could encounter the Kanto region’s Professor Oak to trigger different events. One would see Professor Oak tell the player that the Legendary bird Pokemon Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres have been spotted roaming across the Sinnoh Region. Like Cresselia, these roaming Legendaries could be encountered at random in the wild. If Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl include details and events like this from Pokemon Platinum, then fans could expect to see the Legendary birds appear as well. Perhaps the remakes could include the birds’ Galarian forms too.

Mythical Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In the Pokemon series, there is a clear distinction between Legendary and Mythical Pokemon, being that Mythical monsters are said to be even more rare than Legendaries, and can typically only be obtained in-game via Mystery Gift or a special distribution event item. In Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, available Mythical Pokemon included Manaphy, Phione, Darkrai, and Shaymin, with Arceus being the only Mythical Pokemon that was unobtainable without cheating.

The Mythical Seafaring Pokemon Manaphy could previously only be legitimately obtained if players owned a copy of Pokemon Ranger, allowing them to send an egg to their Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum game. Phione could then be obtained by breeding Manaphy with a Ditto. Of course, the Pokemon Ranger series hasn’t seen a new entry in quite some time, so there may be a new method to obtain Manaphy and Phione in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Previously, the only way to legitimately capture the Pitch-Black Pokemon Darkrai was through the Member Card distribution event in Diamond and Pearl. After obtaining the Member Card and completing the in-game Cresselia event, players could go to Canalave City’s Harbor Inn to fall asleep and wake up on Newmoon Island, where Darkrai could then be battled and caught. It is currently unknown whether a Darkrai event will be included in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, or if a similar distribution will be held for the games.

Much like Darkrai, Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum players could only legitimately obtain Shaymin with the Oak’s Letter item distributed via Mystery Gift. This would allow players to access Flower Paradise, where they could then battle and capture the Mythical Gratitude Pokemon. In Pokemon Platinum, players could change Shaymin to its Sky Forme by obtaining the Gracidea Flower in Floaroma Town. Observant fans have noticed that the NPC who would give players the item in Pokemon Platinum looks to be in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, so it’s safe to say that Shaymin and its Sky Forme could make an appearance in the remakes.

Finally, the Mythical Alpha Pokemon Arceus will make an appearance in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as well. Previously, obtaining the Azure Flute item would trigger an in-game event allowing players to encounter and capture Arceus. However, the Azure Flute was never officially distributed, making it impossible to obtain Arceus without receiving it through a promotional distribution. Arceus is quite an important monster in the lore of the Pokemon universe, especially considering the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus game, so many are hoping to see it appear in some form in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl will release on Nintendo Switch in late 2021.
