Every Pokemon Confirmed For Pokemon Unite

Following its initial reveal a year ago, The Pokemon Company has finally announced when its first foray into the MOBA genre of video games will be arriving on Nintendo Switch. Pokemon Unite will be free-to-play on Switch from this July, while arrival on mobile will come later in the year in September.

Unite will effectively be League of Legends meets Pokemon, a concept that is bound to appeal to a wide array of people who have their feet in both worlds. Players will have a team of five Pokemon in each match, all of whom will start at level one and in their first evolutionary stage, then progress depending on their success. This success will result in points scored and will result in your Pokemon evolving mid-match.

Defeating rival Pokemon will also get you Aeos Energy. That can be deposited in the opposing team’s goal zone to score points and is effectively how you win matches. How that all works can be seen in the latest gameplay trailer for Pokemon Unite below. You can also see some of the Pokemon to have made the initial cut of the game. For a full list of Pokemon that will be available at launch and which categories they fall into, keep reading.

You won’t be able to fill your five Unite slots with just any Pokemon you like. The group of 19 has been split into five distinct categories: Attacker, Defender, Speedster, Support, and All-Rounder. You will be tasked with picking one Pokemon from each category while also making sure you have a good balance between Pokemon that used ranged attacks and ones that use melee. Here are all 19 Pokemon that will be available at launch and which categories they all into.

Attackers

  • Cinderace (ranged)
  • Pikachu (ranged)
  • Alolan Ninetails (ranged)
  • Venasaur (ranged)
  • Greninja (ranged)
  • Cramorant (ranged)

Attackers will be the most exciting Pokemon on your team and all six available at launch will use ranged attacks. Pikachu and Cinderace take center stage, and the latter can be seen doing quite a number on its opponents in the trailer above.

Defenders

  • Crustle (melee)
  • Slowbro (ranged)
  • Snorlax (melee)

It will be the job of the defenders to try and hold off Unite’s attackers. Snorlax has been a natural-born defender since the original games, stopping trainers from getting past for 25 years and counting. If only we had been able to jump over it like Cinderace, Pokemon Red & Blue would have been much shorter games.

Speedsters

  • Absol (melee)
  • Gengar (melee)
  • Talonflame (melee)

While most of your Unite gameplay will be battling in the field against other Pokemon, scoring points is the name of the game. That will be where your chosen Speedster gets the chance to shine. Have Gengar pick up your Aeos Energy and run it to the goal zone as quickly as it can, batting away opposing Pokemon with its melee attacks as it goes.

Supports

  • Wigglytuff (ranged)
  • Mr. Mime (melee)
  • Eldegloss (ranged)

Mr. Mime can be shown supporting Snorlax in the trailer above, filling its role perfectly, albeit not very effectively. These three Pokemon might never take center stage, since some of the others already mentioned will be the showstoppers in your squad. However, they are key to your team of five, even if Mr. Mime does nothing to stop Cinderace’s progression towards the goal zone.

All Rounders

  • Charizard (melee)
  • Lucario (melee)
  • Machamp (melee)
  • Garchomp (melee)

Jacks of all trades, masters of none. Spot number five will be taken by one of four all-rounders. They can do a little bit of everything, and will be there to back up the rest of your team, regardless of their position or what is needed from them. Lucario can run Aeos Energy into the goal zone or defend it from an incoming attack, while Charizard can fight off an opponent or speed across to the other side of the arena. They can truly do it all.

On top of the 19 Pokemon listed above that will be available to choose from when Unite comes to Switch this July, Blastoise and Gardevoir will also be added at a later date. That later date has not yet been specified, nor have the categories the two new Pokemon will fall into. The Pokemon Company has also revealed Unite’s full roster will eventually feature more than 40 playable Pokemon. That doesn’t sound like too many, but it’sswit actually a significant chunk of Pokemon’s full Pokedex when you lump in all of the above’s pre-evolved forms, and the pre-evolved forms of the Pokemon yet to come.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
