Every year since the release of Niantic’s mobile augmented reality game Pokemon GO, players across the world have gathered together in cities like Chicago and Yokohama in an official celebration known as Pokemon GO Fest. Typically, the event consists of completing challenges to unlock rewards, a surplus of Shiny Pokemon to be found out in the wild, and the occasional surprises like new monsters, new Shinies, and more.
Of course, Pokemon GO Fest hit a bit of a snag last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hindering many individuals from traveling or meeting up in large groups. As a result, the event was adapted to an entirely global virtual format where players could partake in GO Fest wherever they were, gaining access to the event’s special bonuses and perks after purchasing a ticket online. Now, Pokemon GO has released the first details on Pokemon GO Fest 2021.
Niantic announced today that Pokemon GO Fest 2021 will take place from July 17 to July 18, returning again in a global format similar to last year’s event. In the announcement for the upcoming event, Niantic urged players not to miss out on GO Fest this year, as it takes place during both Pokemon GO’s 5th anniversary and the Pokemon franchise’s 25th anniversary as a whole.
It may be worth noting that this year’s Pokemon GO Fest may feature some sort of musical theme, as music notes can be seen in the event’s logo. Additionally, the official update on Pokemon GO’s website emphasizes that fans should stay “tuned” for more details, further teasing some sort of musical aspect. For the time being, fans speculate that this could mean anything from GO Fest 2021 featuring music-themed Pokemon, to including a virtual concert during the event as part of this year’s P25 Music Celebration, which has featured a virtual concert from Post Malone, with plans to feature music from other artists like Katy Perry and J Balvin.
Right now, Niantic hasn’t revealed when tickets will go on sale or how much tickets will cost, but it has eased some fans to at least know that the event will be celebrated globally again this year. Unfortunately, it seems that each year, GO Fest is struck with different technical difficulties, though Niantic always makes sure to make it up to fans, so it will be interesting to see how this year’s event plays out.
Just yesterday, Pokemon GO announced the arrival of the Legendary Pokemon Xerneas and Yveltal to the game, as it is currently in the process of rolling out many 6th generation Pokemon. As Pokemon GO Fest 2021 is only a few months away, it’s very likely that fans will learn more about the upcoming event very soon.
