The first Scream 2022 trailer has finally arrived, but which characters and actors are returning for the fifth installment in the Scream series? Scream revived the dying slasher sub-genre when it arrived in multiplexes in 1996. Fresh, funny, and surprisingly scary, the meta slasher’s ingenious premise—a group of cine-literate teens who know the rules of the slasher sub-genre are targeted by an equally savvy killer—made the movie a huge hit and ensured that Scream soon spawned a lucrative franchise.

That franchise seemingly ended in 2011 with the arrival of the late, great Wes Craven’s Scream 4. A belated sequel that reunited the (surviving members of) the original cast, Scream 4 received solid reviews and was widely seen as a step up from the lesser Scream 3, if not quite as strong as the first two movies in the series. Outside of a barely-related MTV series, the Scream franchise then went dormant—until now.

The Scream 2022 trailer promises plenty of gory fun for fans of the franchise, as well as the all-important return of some pivotal players in the series. In an attempt to establish a new standalone canon, the Scream TV series ignored the existence of the movies, whereas Scream’s 2022 reboot is bringing back most of the original movie’s cast. Like 2018’s successful Halloween reboot, Scream will see the return of the original movie’s final girl, but this sequel will also bring back supporting characters—and possibly some secret cameos from long-forgotten franchise figures.

Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott

The most pivotal figure in the series, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott is the resourceful, charismatic Final Girl whose life the slasher franchise centers around. It is her mother’s murder before the events of Scream that sets the series into motion, and it is Sidney who faces down and eventually kills (major spoilers follow) Billy Loomis, Mickey, her half-brother Roman, and her cousin Jill throughout the franchise. While recent slasher remake Candyman brought back the original franchise’s Tony Todd for a brief cameo, Sidney’s role in the Scream reboot is clearly a more substantial part. From the evidence provided by the trailer, the resilient character will be the new Scream’s main character and will arrive to help Dewey and Gale solve the mystery of who is behind the latest spate of killings. This marks a departure from earlier movies in the series, wherein Sidney never sought out the killer and instead was unfortunate enough to be targeted again and again no matter where she went.

David Arquette’s Dewey

Actor/sometimes wrestler David Arquette will join Campbell as one of the cast members returning for the fifth time. Longtime fans of the series will know that Arquette’s erstwhile Deputy (now Sheriff) Dewey has been a major player in the franchise since the original self-referential slasher Scream, and has provided both comic relief and occasional action movie heroics throughout the four movies. Frequently a target of injuries both comical and serious, Arquette’s lovably sheepish character could be the most harmless of the franchise’s heroes. As such, it seems likely that a Scream reboot attempting to establish its credentials as a hardcore horror would swiftly dispatch of such a sweetheart, and Dewey’s bloodied appearance in the trailer hardly augurs well for Arquette’s future in the franchise. That said, Dewey survived being stabbed in the back (literally, not figuratively) in both Scream and Scream 2, so new viewers should underestimate the character at their peril.

Courtney Cox’s Gale Weathers

Possibly the actor’s most memorable role outside of being Chandler’s partner/high-strung comic heroine Monica in Friends, Courtney Cox’s Gale will return as the intrepid reporter-turned-true-crime-novelist investigating another set of killings by a masked murderer. Gale is among the franchise’s hardiest characters and could be another legacy figure likely to be killed off, but her odds of survival are second only to Sidney when it comes to series pedigree. Gale made it through all four movies and even managed to remain uninjured in Scream 3, meaning she may be safe from the killer’s clutches this time around.

Roger L Jackson’s Ghostface

To the delight of many franchise fans, the original Ghostface killer Roger L. Jackson will return as the voice of Ghostface. This is not a clue to the killer’s identity, as the Scream universe is replete with voice changers that ensure the actor’s raspy, instantly recognizable vocals have been shared by the villains of all four franchise installments. Still, Ghostface’s voice is as iconic as Micheal Myer’s Halloween mask, making this exciting news for fans of the series and ensuring the reboot will stay true to the originals.

Marley Shelton’s Judy Hicks

To the surprise of some fans, Marley Shelton will reprise her role as Woodsboro police officer Judy Hicks in 2022’s Scream reboot. An obvious red herring introduced in Scream 4, Hicks was mostly notable for being a too-chipper officer who was uncomfortably close with her boss Dewey but turned out to be a harmless figure. Although a minor character Shelton’s Hicks did play a pivotal heroic role in the movie’s climax, meaning her reboot return is a welcome, if unexpected, one.

Other Scream Characters Who Could Return

It is unclear from the trailer and remains speculative, but Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher may possibly return in 2022’s Scream. The fan-favorite character was a killer in the first movie, and memorably had a TV dropped on him, but his death has never been confirmed in the way Billy Loomis’ bullet to the head left his fate fairly set in stone for the remainder of the franchise. For years, fans have speculated that Stu could technically still be alive, and with Lillard saying he’d love to return, the trailer confirming that the victims are related to the original killers, and footage of Sidney visiting his old home, this until-now unlikely scenario is starting to seem possible. What is less likely, but still possible, is that Scream 4’s Kirby (who many fans noted never died onscreen, and original series director Craven expressed interest in bringing back) may make an appearance. However, the fact that Kirby’s actor Hayden Panettiere has largely retired from acting makes this cameo less likely than Lillard, who is currently undergoing something of a late-career revival. Thus, Scream’s returning cast will definitely consist of Sidney, Gale, Dewey, Judy, and Ghostface, but may also slip in one or two more familiar faces.
