Every Star Wars Character Returning In The Bad Batch

The upcoming animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch will see the return of not only Clone Force 99, but also many other characters from the greater Star Wars franchise. As the sequel series to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch takes place in the immediate aftermath of Order 66 and the fascist coup that twisted the Republic into the Galactic Empire. With the galaxy in turmoil and most of the Clone Army having been brainwashed into becoming Imperial minions, the commandos of Clone Force 99 will stand apart, as they always have, and become one of the Empire’s earliest opponents.

Given its place on the Star Wars timeline, The Bad Batch could easily intersect with characters and plot elements seen in the video game Jedi: Fallen Order and the spinoff film Solo: A Star Wars Story. As fugitives of the fledgling Galactic Empire, the clone heroes may find themselves working alongside (or helping establish) early Rebel or Partisan cells, putting them in the same circles as characters from other properties. The Bad Batch can also connect to Star Wars Rebels and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, clearing up any lingering loose ends and adding even more context to the era between the prequel and original trilogies.

In addition to Echo and the original four clone commandos, The Bad Batch will also see the debut of a mysterious new character: Omega. Given her name and appearance, Omega may be the last clone made from the Jango Fett template. As shown in a trailer, Omega joins the Bad Batch in deserting the Empire. The final batches of Jango Fett clones became the brainwashed Purge Troopers, so if Omega is the final Clone Trooper, she avoided a horrifying fate by leaving the Empire. How Omega would remove her control chip implant and retain her free would need to be explained as well. Though the new character is exciting, many are looking forward to the returns of others from the Star Wars universe.

Clone Force 99

Having debuted in the final season of The Clone Wars, Clone Force 99, aka the “Bad Batch,” is a squad of five clones, the original four possessing mutations the Republic military deemed useful. Hunter, Crosshair, Tech, and Wrecker worked alongside Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex, rescuing the ARC Trooper Echo from Separatist captivity. Echo, whose limbs and nervous system have been largely replaced with cybernetics, became the squad’s fifth member. How these enhanced clones will resist or remove their control chip implants is unknown, but both trailers for The Bad Batch make it clear they harbor loyalty to their ideals, not the Empire’s authoritarianism. The Bad Batch clones are shown disarming their brainwashed brothers rather than killing them.

Sheev Palpatine

Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, is the ultimate villain of the Star Wars Skywalker saga, having orchestrated the Clone Wars by playing both sides with his two identities. The Bad Batch, like all other Clone Troopers, were created to fight in this phony war, befriend the Jedi, and then murder them when their implant-induced brainwashing was activated. Some clones, such as Rex and the Bad Batch, keep their free will and fight against the mastermind behind their creation. Palpatine will most likely not interact with the Bad Batch directly, as the clone heroes would almost certainly be killed if they attacked him. Palpatine’s fighting skills and strength in the dark side match his brilliance.

Fennec Shand

The human assassin Fennec Shand debuted in The Mandalorian, at first as a target of Din Djarin, but later as an ally, working alongside the legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett. As seen in the trailer, Fennec Shand may be hired by the Empire to hunt down the Bad Batch clones, but given her status as a mercenary, this could change throughout the series. By the time she appears in The Mandalorian, Shand is a fugitive of the ISB (Imperial intelligence), possibly hinting she turns on her Imperial clients and assists the Bad Batch. Her appearance also reveals Boba Fett is not the first Jango clone she’s met.

Wilhuff Tarkin

One of the primary antagonists of Star Wars, the eventual Grand Moff Tarkin also appeared in The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Rogue One. A major leader within the Republic military and later the Imperial government, Tarkin observes and evaluates the Bad Batch during a battle simulation on Kamino. While noting their extraordinary fighting prowess, he’s also fully aware of their disobedient nature. He’s later shown ordering their elimination, indicating he may be a main antagonist of The Bad Batch. In addition to possibly hiring Fennec Shand to hunt down the rogue clones, Tarkin may also be one of the Imperial leaders who decides to replace Clone Troopers with recruited Stormtroopers.

Lama Su

Lama Su returns after appearances in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and The Clone Wars. A shrewd and callus businessman, as well as the Prime Minister of Kamino, Lama Su was a key component of the Clone Troopers’ creation (and their mind control implants), making him invaluable to Palpatine’s machinations, whether he knew it or not. Su notably helped cover up ARC Trooper Fives’ discovery of the control chips and could be an obstacle to the Bad Batch and Omega removing theirs. Since clone production ends after the Clone Wars and the clones are replaced by recruits, it’s unknown what will happen to Lama Su in the age of the Empire.

Captain Rex

The fan-favorite clone Captain Rex was one of the main protagonists of The Clone Wars and a recurring supporting character in Rebels. Rex’s popularity among viewers and creators alike led him to have a retroactive cameo appearance in Return of the Jedi, so it’s a pleasant surprise for many that Rex appeared in a Bad Batch trailer. Rex is seen accompanying the Bad Batch and Omega as they explore the wreckage of a clone Venator-class Star Destroyer, indicating that they may be searching for other clones who refused to join the Empire. The Bad Batch could reveal how Rex ended up on Seelos with Wolffe and Gregor, as seen in Rebels.

Saw Gerrera

Saw Gerrera was a key character in Rogue One, having debuted in The Clone Wars and making brief appearances in Rebels and Fallen Order. Originally a Rebel fighting to free Onderon from the Separatist Alliance, Saw become a radical opponent of the Empire, founding the group known as the Partisans. A trailer shows brainwashed Clone Troopers attacking Onderon and Saw allying himself with the Bad Batch. The clone heroes may be introduced to Saw through Rex and become some of the first members of Saw’s Partisans. They may end up leaving the group as it becomes increasingly unethical. Saw’s return, as well as all of the other characters coming back for the show, will help connect Star Wars: The Bad Batch to the larger Star Wars saga.
