Star Wars 8: Benicio Del Toro Isn’t Ezra Bridger
Director Rian Johnson has shot down speculation that Benicio Del Toro is Rebels character Ezra Bridger in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Benicio Del Toro is not secretly playing Star Wars Rebels’ Ezra Bridger in Star Wars: The Last Jedi according to its director. Ever since Del Toro joined the cast of the next edition of the Skywalker Saga, fans have been anxious to figure out who he will be. Theories have run wild with speculation posing the possibility of him playing a Fett, a Sith lord, a member of the Knights of Ren, and more. However, one of the other most frequently theorized options is that he’s actually Ezra Bridger from the Star Wars Rebels animated series.
Ezra is a fascinating character on Rebels who has grown from a young, inexperienced Force wielder to someone who struggles between being a true Jedi and allowing the dark side to creep in. However, this option became less likely when it was revealed that Del Toro’s character went by DJ during production. Now director Rian Johnson has stated definitively that he is in fact not Ezra.

GMA asked Johnson about Del Toro’s mysterious character following The Last Jedi’s presence at D23. Fans got a new look at DJ in the behind-the-scenes featurette that was released, leading to Johnson being asked about the character’s identity. While Ezra may be off the table, his response hints that there is still more to his name.

While Del Toro playing Ezra was always a bit far fetched, it is good to know with absolute clarity that this isn’t one of the options for his identity. Rebels is entering its final seasons and will be in the thick of it when The Last Jedi hits theaters. Making Del Toro Ezra would dramatically changed the way audiences view Ezra in the closing episodes of the series. If Ezra is destined to join the ranks of live-action characters, it will be done without Del Toro’s help it appears.
Ezra may be out of the question now, but Johnson does state that DJ does stand for something specific (other than Disk Jockey). What exactly it could be is sure to be a big point of speculation moving forward as fans look for every hint to his true identity. However, with Johnson saying he is his own character, it may be best to not anticipate his true name being one that fans will already know. That could very well be the reasoning behind the immense secrecy, which is fairly standard for Star Wars at this point. Either way, whoever Del Toro is and whatever DJ stands for probably won’t be revealed before the movie arrives, so fans will more than likely have to wait until December to find out.
