IO Interactive has done an impressive job of reimagining the Hitman series in recent years, dropping players into massive stealth sandboxes that let them take practically any approach they want. Hitman 3 looks to continue that legacy on PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as current-gen consoles.

Hitman 3 will bring a close to the rebooted story of Agent 47, and just like with Hitman 2, IO Interactive will allow players to import locations from the last two games. Of course, there are plenty of new locations for players to explore as well.

Hitman 3 received a wealth of details at its announcement during the PS5 reveal, and it’s clear that IO Interactive is learning from everything they’ve done with the first two games.

Hitman 3 Release Date

Unlike most of the games revealed during the PS5 event, Hitman 3 was announced with a relatively firm release date of January 2021. While that doesn’t give an exact day, it’s clear that IO Interactive already has a date in mind. Hitman 3 will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, as well as Xbox One and PS4.

When Hitman 3 launches the entire campaign will be playable from start to finish, although IO does have other plans in the works according to its blog post, which reads “HITMAN 3 will act as a platform for the entire trilogy, and we are excited to finally realise a vision that we had five years ago; to create a game world that would continually grow and expand over time.” Hitman 3 is going to be the first full game that IO Interactive self-publishes, and players will be able to carry over their data from Hitman 1 and 2.

Hitman 3 Story

Hitman 3 follows up on the new story established with the previous two games and has Agent 47 going on another globetrotting adventure. The goal of Hitman 3 is to finally eliminate the partners of Providence, and 47 has to team up with his handler Diana Burnwood, as well as his long-lost friend Lucas Grey, to get that done.

Outside of all the locations from previous games, the reveal trailer detailed one new location, Dubai. Apparently, the entire trailer was captured in-engine, and the towering skyscrapers of Dubai certainly make for a different scene from what 47 is used to. More new locations will be revealed closer to the game’s release.

Hitman 3 Gameplay

Hitman 3 drops players into a massive assassination sandbox, where they can complete objectives in any way they see fit. IO Interactive said in its announcement post that there are new gameplay features in Hitman 3, but as of writing those features haven’t been shown off.

The reveal trailer did provide a few quick glimpses of how the Dubai mission might play out. One shot had 47 sneaking up the pipes of a building wearing a skydiving suit, suggesting that the assassin dove down to the building. Sneaking and subterfuge will remain essential aspects of the experience in Hitman 3 like they always have in the series.
