The hit thriller series You follows the romantic misadventures of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), a charming stalker and serial killer who would literally do anything for love. After developing an unhealthy obsession with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) in season 1, Joe moved on with Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) — who, as revealed by You season 2 ending, is also impulsive and willing to kill for “love.”

You season 3 sees Joe and Love living together and raising a child in the Californian suburb of Madre Linda; however, just because Joe is tied down does not stop him from looking for his next obsession. The season reveals more events from his childhood that explain his impulse to find a target he can protect. First, Joe meets Natalie Engler (Michaela McManus), their next-door neighbor, whose older, distant husband and shared love for reading draw him in. But right at the start of the season, Natalie is taken out of the picture by Love. Later on, after discovering similarities in their history, Joe realizes that his perfect match is Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle)

In a shocking twist, You season 3 ends with Joe killing Love, leaving his son Henry to a loving family, and fleeing Madre Linda for Paris, just to look for Marienne. On October 13, 2021, Netflix officially announced You season 4 — days before the streaming service debuted the most recent season. This is unsurprising, considering You is one of Netflix’s biggest titles. In fact, according to Netflix’s viewing figures, You season 2 has accumulated 457 million viewing hours in its first 28 days, and its successor is showing no signs of slowing down.

You Season 4 Story: How Season 3’s Twist Ending Sets It Up

You season 3 ends with a blast, literally, giving room to potential season 4 storylines. After injecting Love with a lethal dose of aconite, Joe plants his DNA in the crime scene and burns down their house, leaving Madre Linda’s residents a juicy murder-suicide tale. He then decides not to bring Henry along as he searches for Marienne, so he leaves his son in the care of Dante (Ben Mehl) and his partner. Without his wife and son to hold him back, at the end of You season 3, Joe goes to Paris to look for Marienne — whatever it takes.

Although life in the suburbs moves forward, those who have been wronged by the Quinn-Goldbergs, including Theo (Dylan Arnold), Matthew (Scott Speedman), and Dottie (Saffron Burrows), might still look for justice — especially since even though Joe eventually goes abroad, he is not exactly in hiding. He might also have difficulty convincing Marienne to take him back, after she has learned of his deception, but knowing Joe’s ability to spin the truth, anything is still possible. That is, if, along the way, he does not meet another woman he deems worthy of his protection and obsession. Perhaps, Joe might also fulfill his promise of returning for Henry, once he is ready.

You Season 4 Cast: Who Can Return?

Of course, Penn Badgley will return as the main character Joe in You season 4, with Tati Gabrielle reprising her role as his object of affection. Victoria Pedretti might also return in a recurring role, either through flashbacks or Joe’s imagination — similar to the scenes involving Beck and Candace Stone (Ambyr Childers). There is also a possibility of more flashbacks of young Joe, so his biological mother might be around, too. But aside from that, since You season 4 moves to Paris (or around the world), audiences can expect a whole new set of characters.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, You creator Sera Gamble shares her excitement of bringing Joe to life, hinting at “new, dark facets of love in Season 4”. When asked how long she thinks You will last, she replied, “Realistically, [Joe] could [keep murdering] until long after all of us are dead.” But right now, she is just grateful to the fans who have continuously supported the series, sharing in the twisted romantic journey of Joe Goldberg — who is showing a different, albeit still disturbed, side in You season 3.
