There is mounting evidence that the adult Monica Rambeau will appear in Captain Marvel 2. The first Captain Marvel movie introduced audiences to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers so she can be the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward, but the film also set up another hero. The movie featured the debut of Monica Rambeau as a kid, played by Akira Akbar, who looked up to Carol during 1995. In the comics, Monica was Captain Marvel before Carol and has taken on several different superhero names since.
Monica is a fan-favorite character in the comics, and her introduction in the MCU’s past immediately generated excitement amongst fans that she’d play a larger role in the future. This does appear to be Marvel Studios’ plan, as it was announced in 2019 that Teyonah Parris was cast as the adult Monica Rambeau. She’ll make her debut in WandaVision on Disney+, but many anticipate that Monica will also have a role in Captain Marvel 2. Not only is she familiar with Carol and the franchise already, but there are even more reasons to believe Monica will be in the sequel.
Once Marvel cast Parris as adult Monica Rambeau, fans have wondered what role she will play in WandaVision and beyond. Set photos indicate she works for SWORD, which makes sense after her alien encounter at a young age and connection to Nick Fury, but it isn’t clear if she has her powers yet or not. WandaVision could go a long way in setting up Monica’s return for Captain Marvel 2, especially because of some creative factors. Megan McDonnell is writing the script for Captain Marvel 2, and she got the job after working on WandaVision. It would stand to reason that McDonnell is already familiar with writing for adult Monica then, so she could have a significant hand in crafting her MCU story in the present day.
The writer of Captain Marvel 2 isn’t the only one with a connection to the MCU’s adult Monica Rambeau anymore. Marvel has hired Nia DaCosta to direct the sequel to Larson’s $1 billion solo film. DaCosta is the director of the 2020 Candyman sequel/reboot, which happens to feature Teyonah Parris in one of the lead roles. Marvel might not have hired DaCosta specifically because she has a working history with an actor who could appear in Captain Marvel 2, but DaCosta and Parris’ familiarity with one another doesn’t hurt. And, as the MCU’s first Black female director, DaCosta could be even more inclined to feature a rising Black female hero prominently.
Even with the connections Parris/Rambeau have to Captain Marvel 2, Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce that the adult Monica will make an appearance. Since the sequel won’t be in theaters until 2022, it still might be a while before the return of Monica is confirmed. But, with WandaVision setting up Captain Marvel 2 in a variety of different ways, the debut of adult Monica Rambeau could be another way that the Disney+ show lays the foundation for the MCU sequel.
