Baron Zemo returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and here’s what his story has been so far. The Disney+ series stars Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Both characters are receiving starring roles in an MCU property after years of only being support. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the next chapter in their stories will involve other characters from the MCU’s past as well.
One of the familiar faces from the MCU who will appear in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is Daniel Brühl’s villainous Helmut Zemo, who first appeared in Captain America: Civil War. His role has only briefly been teased but it is clear that he’ll become closer to his comic counterpart this time around. Zemo will dawn the purple mask from the comics at last in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Still, it’s been nearly five years since Zemo last appeared, so it’s understandable if some of the details on his MCU history have been forgotten. Ahead of his return, what is known about Zemo already?
Baron Zemo’s MCU story begins in 1978 when he is born Sokovia. The nature of his childhood is not known, but he grew up in the European country and stayed there for most of his adult life. His brilliant mind paved the way for Zemo to become a Sokovian intelligence officer and lead one of the country’s best military units known as EKO Scorpion. Despite this lifestyle, Zemo settled down and started a family in Sokovia where he was quite happy with his life. That all changed in 2015 when Ultron attacked Sokovia. Zemo and EKO Scorpion were tasked with defending the country, forcing him to leave his family. He discovered that they died during Ultron’s attack two days later and blamed the Avengers for their deaths.
The loss of Zemo’s family fueled him to find a way to tear the Avengers apart. This led him to search for information on Hydra and the Winter Soldier Program. He managed to track down a former member and leader of the program who lived in America and took a book filled with information on the program after killing the man. Zemo was specifically interested in gathering information about the death of Howard and Maria Stark on December 16, 1991 – who, as it turned out, had been killed by Bucky when he was still brainwashed and programmed as the Winter Soldier. He then impersonated Bucky to frame him for the UN bombing that killed T’Chaka, the then-king of Wakanda, later posing as a psychiatrist to gain access to Bucky once he was captured.
Zemo used the Winter Soldier book to initiate Bucky’s programming and then fled the scene amidst the chaos. He quickly traveled to Moscow to visit the location of the Winter Soldier Program and killed the other Winter Soldiers that Hydra created. Once Captain America, Iron Man, and Bucky arrived at the scene, he unveiled the footage of Bucky killing Tony Stark’s parents, escaping when Tony turned on Bucky and Steve. It was after this that Zemo attempted to take his own life but Black Panther stopped him, leading to him becoming a prisoner of Everett Ross and the Joint Counter-Terrorism Centre.
When Zemo returns in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the show will have the chance to build upon one of the MCU’s most underrated villains. The trailers indicate he’ll be working with Sam and Bucky for a time, potentially even being their guide through Madripoor. But, it remains to be seen if Zemo’s alliance with them will last throughout the show or if he’ll turn out to be The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s villain in the end. Either way, Baron Zemo’s return could provide the setup for his MCU future.
