Fallout tells the story of a post-war America that has struggled to rebuild. Although some regions recovered faster, the entire country had problems. Those who were lucky enough to survive were trapped inside of Vault-Tec’s experimental chambers. Vaults were meant to be a safe haven but were often used for more nefarious purposes. Anyone or anything outside of the vaults was also at risk of falling victim to the Great War or the radiation.

When venturing out into the wastelands, your character is bound to run into victims of the Great War. This includes docile animals, such as the two-headed Brahmin or dogs which help survivors. Many humans lived on to create future generations. Humans also struggled with the after-effects of the nuclear war. Many humans transformed into immortal creatures known as the Scorched or Ghouls.

Ghouls and the Scorched were unfortunate victims of radiation poisoning. Not all humans managed to retain their humanity. After the Great War, there were sinister groups who wanted to see what science was possible. These groups captured unsuspecting humans and transformed them into fearsome beasts. Gamers first learned about Super Mutants from Fallout 1. We would later learn that they were created even sooner in West Virginia during Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 is the latest entry to the series, which only created more questions than answers about the creatures. There’s still so much that we don’t know about Super Mutants, but at the same time, many questions. They were once human but no longer retain human qualities.

The name of the creatures has changed throughout the series, even though Super Mutant is the most common.

There are other variations of the name, including “Super Mutants,” “Super-Mutant,” “Supermutant,” and simply “Mutants.” While the developers may not be sure of the best way to spell the name of these creatures, gamers know them best as hostile enemies.

The Enclave also experimented on humans at the Mariposa Military Base. Their soldiers were exposed to the FEV at the base, turning them into the second generation of Super Mutants. The Enclave managed to eliminate most of their former soldiers, but not all of them.

All Super Mutants quickly learn how to wield a weapon. Though some docile Mutants only use a weapon to defend themselves, others become so enraged that they don’t know how to do anything else but fight.

16 Many Want A Place To Call Home

Super Mutants are rarely seen wandering post-war America alone. They often work together in groups. Super Mutants also feel the sense of community of their former human selves. After feeling outcast by both Docile and Feral Mutants, a group of Nightkin formed their own utopia.

In 2279, Tabitha formed the State of Utobitha by taking over Black Mountain.

The settlement is filled with Nightkin and remnants from Mariposa’s Super Mutant army. It’s not surprising but Humans are not welcome anywhere near the settlement.

In Fallout, many humans work as hard as possible to rebuild post-war America. They don’t live forever and must make an impact when they’re still alive.

If a human is transformed into a Super Mutant, that change is forever. They won’t return into human form, even after defeat. The process does have a significant benefit: all Super Mutants are immortal. If they decide to live in peace in Black Mountain or Jacobstown, they can continue to enjoy their long lives. They’ll live forever as long as they don’t get into trouble.

Most Super Mutants gamers run into having limited dialogue. They’re not interested in becoming friends. They only want to fight. The Black Mountain’s State of Utobitha is different.

Though they do have a captive named Raul helping maintain the radio signal, Tabitha manages to go live on-air all day, every day.

At first, the Enclave tried to get rid of the mutants. They then realized these creatures could be used in other ways. They used the Super Mutants as captives and forced them to work for them. Unfortunately, the prisoners grew angry, and the Enclave was forced to escape.

Lily had grandchildren, which she remembers fondly. Her only memento of them is a holotape recording of them greeting her. Lily’s body may have physically changed, but she has retained her precious memories.

11 They’re All The Same

New Vegas’ Lily wants to remember her grandchildren. Fallout 4’s Virgil wants to help those he once experimented on, with hopes to permanently reverse the mutation.

Becoming a Super Mutant may sound appealing, but it has many drawbacks. It gives the victim a variety of superhuman powers at the cost of their humanity. In Fallout 3, Fawkes tells the Lone Wanderer about the pain he experiences. He barely manages to live another day but can understand how some Super Mutants become feral due to their issues.

7 West-Tek Created More Than Defense Products

Vault-Tec is well-known for using their vaults to experiment on human subjects. It wasn’t the only company that would test on people. West-Tek worked under the U.S. government primarily on the West Coast but also had locations in West Virginia.

Over time, the humans started mutating into Super Mutants. West-Tek’s sinister deeds paid off in the end. They created some of the earliest known Super Mutants to roam the East Coast.

6 Stealth Boys Changed Them

Nightkins were the Master’s most elite warriors. They are intelligent beings who had unlimited access to the best armor and weapons. They also used Stealth Boys to achieve their sinister goals. After decades of use, many Nightkin became addicted to Stealth Boys. It made them turn into angry, hostile, paranoid creatures. Nightkin may seem like the most advanced Super Mutants, but they still fall prey to addictions.
