For over twenty years, the Harry Potter franchise has dominated the magical side of the pop culture zeitgeist, amassing an immense following and becoming one of the most beloved series of novels and films ever. Of all eight movies in the saga, there are two that are so often talked about as being perhaps the best Potter has to offer, one of which being the third entry, The Prisoner Of Azkaban.
Helmed by the phenomenal Alfonso Cuarón, the movie shifts the franchise in a new direction with a darker, more serious tone compared to the first two. But, even with this grittiness and emotional grounding, the movie manages to sprinkle in a good amount of humor and levity.
10 Funniest – Hermione Punching Draco
To say that Hermione is a bit stressed out in this film is an understatement; she is messing with time itself while trying to study extra subjects and, eventually, attempt to save the life of Buckbeak after all.
So, she has a little bit of a shorter fuse, epitomized at the moment when she confronts Draco and his friends, eventually punching him square in the face, sending them packing nearly in tears with their tails between their legs.
9 Saddest – Scabbers Not Being Scabbers At All
Poor Ron, while, as Sirius points out, his rat lived a very long life, something Ron never seemed to find strange, it is still sad that this family pet rat turned out to be a deranged, evil little, well, rat.
Scabbers, of course, turned out to be Peter Pettigrew, after the mysterious individual was seen on the Marauders Map earlier, and there had been some trouble with the rat. Ultimately, while not tear-worthy, or even close, you still have to feel bad for Ron at that moment for being made to look a fool and for losing the rat he so clearly cared about.
8 Funniest – Snowball Fight
Harry, Ron, and Hermione are undoubtedly one of the best trio friendships of all time in terms of pop culture, and there is a slew of wholesome moments between them throughout the series.
That includes this one, which is also a pretty funny one as Harry, under his invisibility cloak, launches snowballs at Draco and his friends, leading to the three, with Ron damn near petrified, finding themselves in a fit of laughter.
7 Saddest – Sirius Offering Harry A Home
Sirius Black is as close to real family life as Harry gets outside of Ron’s family and Hermione, and is a standout character of the movies, making his debut here, bursting on the scene after his escape from Azkaban.
During the movie, Sirius offers Harry a home with him, a place to live outside Hogwarts and away from the Dursley’s, a moment of joy for Harry, and for Sirius when Harry accepts. Unfortunately, what makes this so sad is that it could not happen, and after this moment of fleeting joy, they had to run from Lupin, and Sirius had to go on the run from everyone.
6 Funniest – Ron’s Dream
The Marauders Map is one of many insanely cool pieces of magic in the Wizarding World that everyone wishes they could get their hands on, having a key role in this movie.
In one particular scene where Harry is lying awake in the middle of the night looking over the map, Ron is having a bad dream about spiders, with Harry reassuring that he can beat those spiders, a pretty funny moment from the pair of best friends.
5 Saddest – Finding Out About Sirius’ ‘Betrayal’
Earlier on, Sirius Black got mentioned, particularly the scene in which he offers Harry a home. At the beginning of the movie, though, before everything went down in the Whomping Willow, Sirius was nothing but a murderer who had escaped from Azkaban.
After escaping to Hogsmeade, Harry learns what, at that point, was the truth, Sirius Black was the one that led Voldemort to Harry’s parents. Harry’s emotion in the scene where he tells Ron and Hermione what he heard shines through, and it just reminds audiences of the tragedy of Harry’s life. Of course, the scene gets slightly diluted by the truth, but a friend still led Voldemort to his parents.
4 Funniest – Fat Aunt
The start of this film is the last straw for Harry when it comes to the Dursley’s, with Vernon’s sister round for tea mocking Harry’s family, leading to Harry’s angriest outburst at the Dursley’s to this point.
Harry inadvertently makes Marjory turn into a balloon and float away, one of the most hilarious visual gags across all the movies, and also one of the most satisfying considering how hatable Marjory was.
3 Saddest – The Execution Of Buckbeak
A lot of the time, twisty elements of this film revolve around Buckbeak’s execution, an event triggered by his hurting Draco, and Draco’s over-exaggeration of the events.
Audiences never actually get to see the beautiful creature get killed, mainly because it did not, but still, that moment when you hear the executioner’s blade come down, and Hermione’s reaction to it, is all pretty heartbreaking at the moment.
2 Funniest – Boggart Riddikulusness
As a movie that is widely considered one of the very best of the movie, there are many fondly remembered scenes throughout. But, by far, the funniest and most light-hearted is the Boggart scene.
Everything about the scene from the Boggarts themselves, specifically Alan Rickman’s nana get-up, to Draco’s comment about the class being ridiculous is great, and it is definitely one of the best on-screen class scenes in the movies.
1 Saddest – Learning The Truth
Earlier on, the truth about who led Voldemort to James and Lily was talked about, and near the end of the movie, it gets revealed to be the aforementioned Peter Pettigrew, not Sirius Black.
The entire scene of finding out the truth about this is sad in so many ways. For one, Harry’s parents were betrayed by a close friend, and for two, Sirius has been locked away for all those years serving time for a crime that killed the two people he loved most.
